The fellowship is a lifetime honor. Last year, University professors Rebecca Burdine and Elke Weber were appointed to the position. 37 members of Princeton’s faculty currently hold AAAS fellowships.
Average daily wind speeds have picked up in the last decade after over 30 years of gradual decline, according to research led by a team at the University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The study, published in “Nature Climate Change” on Nov. 18, could implicate a dramatic surge in the efficiency of wind power in the coming years.
The initiative aims to bring together over 30 faculty members from the Departments of Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Physics.

The 'Prince' interviewed Tilghman about her journey through science, her time as President of the University, and the advice she has for young students entering careers in science.
Seeking to help Afghan girls learn coding skills and to empower them both financially and socially, Fereshteh Forough founded Code to Inspire, the first coding school for girls in Afghanistan. At a dinner discussion on Friday, Forough shared her life’s journey, from being born as an Afghan refugee in Iran, to graduating with a master’s degree in computer science from the Technical University of Berlin, to finally founding CTI in 2015.
In a lecture on Thursday, May Boeve, climate change activist and executive director of 350.org, spoke about how she has reshaped the climate change fight for use as a “useful window into unpacking larger topics” against the “specific and unique fight by Donald Trump.”
The solar panels, situated on 27 acres in West Windsor Township, are home to one of the University's green energy initiatives. Seventy-five percent of the panels are tracking panels that will adjust to absorb as much sun as possible. The remaining 25 percent do not track the sunlight and therefore face south in order to maximize absorption. Surrounded by a fence on all sides to protect the fields, the grass in the fields is a special blend that won't grow taller than two feet in order to minimize energy used by mowing the grass.
“We’re interested in providing an outlet for students to learn about, engage with, and have a positive impact on climate change,” Jonathan Lu ’18 said, another co-founder of PSCL. The group’s inception arose from a need to address current issues surrounding just how institutions and lawmakers are handling climate change, as well as a marked lack of discussion at the time within campus itself.
Members of the University science community gathered on the Day of Action to discuss the importance of science and its historical and current role in the political climate.
“We take energy for granted,” Richard said, recalling the devastating Hurricane Sandy, which left thousands of individuals across the East Coast without electricity for days in October 2012. Richard said that he believes a realignment of energy sourcing can be the answer to problems such as those that arise after natural disasters when only traditional energy sources are available.

Trust seems like the only grounds on which non-scientists can accept scientific findings, internationally acclaimed Harvard Professor in the history of science Naomi Oreskes said at a Thursday lecture. However, she noted, trust depends on shared values, which non-scientists and scientists often lack.
“There is a bumper sticker that goes around Princeton that says ‘My Congressman is a rocket scientist’. I’ve always felt kind of proud to be able to say that we have someone representing us in Congress with Rush Holt’s intelligence and his scientific background,” former University President Shirley Tilghman said in a November interview, reflecting on Holt’s popularity among Princeton constituents.Holt has represented New Jersey’s 12th congressional district in the U.S.
