Editorial: A chance to speak out

The Editorial Board is the independent body responsible for determining the position of the ‘Prince’ on matters that impact or affect Princeton and its campus community. We meet three times a week to discuss campus issues, solicit input from potential stakeholders and take editorial positions. We work closely with other sections of the newspaper to gather information about editorial topics, but we deliberate in private and independently determine our own positions to preserve objectivity. The board answers only to its chair, Will Pickering; the executive editor for opinion, Mendy Fisch; and the editor-in-chief, Jack Ackerman.

Current board members come to Princeton from across the country and reflect a broad spectrum of class years, majors, political philosophies and academic and extracurricular interests. Though our backgrounds may vary, we are all equally committed to investigating and discussing issues pertaining to the University community. We strive to bring compelling arguments and perspectives to this page, to balance our praise and criticism and to encourage policy changes that benefit Princeton, its students and its staff.

Our debates are often passionate and heated, and, though we strive for unanimity, our positions are determined by majority vote. Members, excepting the chair, take turns writing editorials, which are then reviewed by the board at large. Under certain circumstances, a unified minority publishes a signed dissent.

The core mission of the board is to inspire discussion and action. But this is impossible without a constant influx of students with unique perspectives — independent thinkers who are eager to debate and willing to engage with issues important to Princeton. We value writing ability, creativity and strength of thought much more than journalistic experience. If you are interested in joining us, we encourage you to fill out our application at dailyprincetonian.com/join by Thursday, Feb. 18. Qualified candidates will be interviewed on Sunday, Feb. 21.
