Standout men’s basketball player Devin Cannady ’19 entered a plea agreement on Mar. 11 for the four charges brought against him after he allegedly threw a punch at a Department of Public Safety Officer in Wawa on Jan. 18. Three of his four charges were dismissed. For the fourth charge, Cannady received a conditional discharge, and he will serve 20 hours of community service as part of the agreement. According to his attorney, Cannady has plans to return to the University in the fall and will be preparing for the NBA draft while on leave.
Cannady was a team captain and Princeton’s leader in points per game this season with an 18.2 average. He is fifth on Princeton’s all-time scoring list with 1515 points and third in three-pointers with 268.
Originally charged with aggravated assault — an indictable charge — the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office had downgraded it to a disorderly persons offense and remanded the case to the Princeton Municipal Court.
The Department of Athletics determined that Cannady has served the appropriate suspension from competition.
Cannady is charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and improper behavior.
“Every year I’ve been here, they’ve beaten the first team they’ve played and lost to the second,” she said. “It was really exciting that this happened in my last year and we got to be a part of the experience and have our class year join the tradition.”
At around 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, a Coach USA bus transporting University students to the Princeton versus Yale football game crashed into a building in West Haven, Conn., approximately 10 minutes from New Haven.
