Aman Sinha ’13 wins Churchill Scholarship

Mechanical and aerospace engineering concentrator Aman Sinha ’13 has been awarded the Churchill Scholarship, the University announced on Jan. 18. The scholarship allows the Ivyland, Pa., native the opportunity to conduct research on information engineering and control theory next year at Cambridge University.

Terrace takes 183, fills in first round

After taking in a record 183 students as of Sunday, Terrace Club will not take any members in the second round of club sign-ins. The other sign-in clubs declined to release first round numbers.“We’re definitely sticking with one round of sign-in because we’ve had an overwhelming response with the class of 2015,” Terrace president Neal Donnelly ’14 said.

U.’s RECAP project seeks to broaden public access to federal court documents

At a time when public access and privacy in an electronic age has come to the forefront of national attention, a University project to make federal court documents available free to the public has received renewed attention and funding. RECAP, a project of the University’s Center for Information Technology Policy, crowdsources the court documents purchased by its users to give the public free access to them.

Students evacuated from Frist due to gas leak in Gallery

A burner was left on in the kitchen area of the Frist Gallery on Friday evening, leading to a leakage of gas, according to Department of Public Safety Patrolman Alan Lawson, who was the officer in charge at the time.The burner’s pilot light, which would have burned off any gas, was turned off. University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua said it is yet to be determined why the light was off.

Minor storm causes brief town power outages

Local residents escaped rather unscathed from a storm of heavy wind and rain after an unusually sunny day on Jan. 30. Unlike the Southern and Midwestern tornadoes that tossed cars and toppled buildings yesterday, the damage from the storm in Princeton was limited to temporary power outages.

U. trustees approve $1.58 billion operating budget for 2013-14 fiscal year

The University’s trustees have approved a $1.58 billion operating budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year, according to a statement released by Nassau Hall on Monday. The budget is 4 percent larger than last year’s budget of $1.5 billion and will fund the 12 month period beginning in June 2013.

Quad raises fees before Bicker week

After significantly lowering its fees to match the cost of a residential college dining hall plan last year, Princeton’s Quadrangle Club has decided to raise its fees for next year's membership. According to an email sent to Quad members and sophomores who have expressed an interest in joining the sign-in club, as well as updates to the Quad and Interclub Council websites, Quad will charge its members $6,600 for the 2013-14 school year — $900 more than this year’s fee of $5,700.

The University received a total of 26,505 applications for the Class of 2017, according to an announcement issued on Jan. 26. The figure represents a slight decrease from the previous year, when the University received 26,663 applicants for the Class of 2016.

The USG approved a package of new election regulations including a ban against defamation, a new reimbursement system, a removal of the ban on the type of campaign materials candidates can use and the removal of all regulation on posters at its Senate meeting Sunday night.

More than 50 students attend Obama’s second inauguration through Whig-Clio trip

WASHINGTON, D.C. — At 3 a.m. Monday morning, 54 students boarded a bus to the nation’s capital to attend the 57th Presidential Inauguration.The trip was organized by the Whig branch of the Whig-Cliosophic Society in response to strong student interest in attending Barack Obama’s second inauguration. The Whigs also coordinated with the College Democrats, offering free round-trip bus tickets to Washington, D.C., to members of both organizations.

Slaughter wins vote from unofficial presidential search website

Princetonpresident.com, a website created by visiting professor Mark Alexander and his American Studies class to gather suggestions regarding the University's presidential search process, named former Wilson School dean Anne-Marie Slaughter ’80 the winning candidate of the website’s voting process. Alexander and his class, AMS 313: The Law of Democracy, now plan to present their findings to the official presidential search committee in the coming weeks.

More than 2,500 students attended Basshunter Silent Disco, USG says

Between 2,500 and 2,700 students attended the USG’s “Silent Disco” Dean’s Date celebration on Tuesday in Dillon Gymnasium, according to USG social chair Benedict Wagstaff ’14.The event featured performances by DJ duo The Jane Doze and Swedish DJ Basshunter. While some students complained about the quality of the headphones and the line to return them at the end of the night, many students said they enjoyed the unique ambience of the event.

Women's Hockey: Princeton drops pair of road games

Returning to ECAC competition for the first time in five weeks, the women's hockey team dropped two road games this weekend to No. 2 Harvard and Dartmouth. The Tigers (6-12-2 overall, 2-10-2 ECAC) are currently in eighth place in the conference with six points, and the outcome of all their future ECAC games will help determine which teams qualify for the postseason tournament. Qualifying spots are still very much up for grabs, as Princeton presently sits just two points above Colgate and Brown and three points above Union and Yale.

Gruenberg ’75 directs expanded FDIC

Martin J. Gruenberg '75, who was appointed chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation by President Obama last November, presides over an agency whose powers have expanded greatly since the financial crisis of 2008. As Obama begins his second term and the country slowly recovers from the recession, Gruenberg suggested that his job as a financial regulator is more central to the administration's goals than ever.
