Senior Diaz loses in Miss USA competition

In the midst of all the glitter and glam of Friday night's 55th Annual Miss USA Pageant was the University's own Adriana Diaz '06. Representing her native state of New York, Diaz competed alongside 50 other women in the nationally-televised pageant.

Diaz, 21, was eliminated from the competition after the initial cut from 51 girls down to 15. She therefore did not compete in the swimsuit and eveningwear competitions nor the question-and-answer session.

Many of Diaz's Princeton friends had made the trip down to Baltimore, Md. — where the pageant was held — to show their support.

"She had a very devoted cheering section throughout the entire pageant," Judnefera Rasayon '06 said.

Manhattan-born Diaz speaks Spanish, French and Mandarin, and her parents hail from the Dominican Republic. Earlier this year, she told the 'Prince' that during her yearlong reign as Miss New York, she wants to "visit schools in inner cities throughout New York" and "focus more on speaking out [about] students applying themselves so they aim to go to good schools."

A Wilson School concentrator and member of Cap and Gown Club, Diaz won the Miss New York USA 2006 crown this past December and was Miss Teen New York USA in 2003. This was her first appearance in the Miss USA pageant.

Miss Kentucky Tara Elizabeth Conner, 20, was crowned Miss USA. Conner will represent the United States July 23 in the Miss Universe competition in Los Angeles.

Though Diaz did not walk away with the tiara this time, the support of her fans never wavered. "Towards the end ... almost two entire rows of supporters were still chanting 'Let's go New York!' and 'A-dri-ana!' " Rasayon said.
