For over a year, Princeton's Student Course Guide (SCG) was inactive, depriving students of an important source of information for choosing classes. Last year's USG administration was unable to create a course guide over the course of a year.
Not even two months into the term of their term, however, the new administration was able to unveil an improved SCG. And earlier this week, the USG announced the creation of another important tool for students: the Room Draw Guide.
With the completion of these two projects, the new USG administration has already made significant contributions to student life. The USG's successful leadership in creating these guides and making them open to the public should serve as an example for future initiatives and future administrations.
Given past problems, it is particularly impressive that the new administration was able to create a new SCG so quickly. While a great deal of the credit belongs to the student programmers who wrote the actual code for the site, the USG's leadership was crucial. By making the SCG a clear priority from the start of the term, the USG was able to provide Princeton students with an easy-to-use, informative course guide.
The creation of the Room Draw Guide provides an interesting contrast to the new SCG. The USG did not spearhead the creation of the Room Draw Guide. Instead, it was started as a class project by several students. Nevertheless, the USG was able to provide the creators of the Room Draw Guide with the resources necessary to make the guide available to the entire student body. The USG's successful effort shows the importance of taking full advantage of Princeton's incredible pool of student talent. By providing technical support and publicity to student efforts such as the Room Draw Guide, the USG can use its resources to support the ingenuity of its constituency.
Of course, both the Student Course Guide and the Room Draw Guide depend on student input to be successful. The USG has provided the tools — now it is up to the student body to make these new guides as useful as possible.
