Tilghman speaks

For the first time in President Tilghman's administration, students will have a public forum set up to let her know what they think.

Tilghman will take questions during this afternoon's CPUC meeting in a format similar to the one 'Prince' columnist David Robinson urged her to adopt last month with brief opening remarks and questions slated to take an hour.

Tilghman is not entirely new to this: She has addressed students concerns on issues before — most notably a forum sponsored by OWL where she defended her female appointees and during the debate over the athletics moratorium. But today will mark the first such open forum Tilghman has participated in on campus that hasn't focused on a single issue.

CPUC meetings are generally sparsely attended, and putting Tilghman's session third on the agenda could dampen students' enthusiasm. But moving the session to McCosh 10 from the meetings' normal home in Friend 101 suggests Tilghman hopes for a big crowd.

We hope so, too.

If the forum's a success, Tilghman won't be the only one leaving with things to think about. Office hours are fine for letting her know what's on a student's mind, but the public setting will allow students to hear each other's concerns.

If held regularly, these meetings could bridge the gap between students and Tilghman, helping the whole University. But for them to be productive, questioners need to feel free to ask about whatever concerns them, and Tilghman needs to be open and straightforward with the audience. Otherwise chances for success will be torpedoed from the start.

Today's session has the potential to be the beginning of a closer relationship between Tilghman and the student body. We hope to see these meetings continue for years to come.
