Harvey ascends the administrative ladder

Laurel Harvey, the director and associate treasurer of the Office of Risk Management, has recently taken the reins as new general manager for administration, the University announced yesterday.

She began work Aug. 5, in the office of Charles Kalmbach '68, senior vice president for administration.

"It seems like a natural next step," Harvey said of her promotion, adding that she thinks she was "at the right place at the right time." Harvey has worked in the University's administration since 1981 when she was the manager of planned giving in the treasurer's office.

"She was one of the best colleagues I've worked with," said University Treasurer Christopher McCrudden, Harvey's former boss. "I think she'll be a real asset [to her new office], but I'm going to miss her."

After being planned giving manager, Harvey became associate director of investments and has also worked in the former Office of Vice President for Finance and Administration, now two separate offices, before returning to the treasurer's office in 1995. For the past six years, Harvey has worked in risk management.

In her former job, Harvey supervised all risk management and insurance functions of the University, oversaw the environmental health and safety office and supervised the finance management of the University's employee health and disability plans and the student health plan.

She has also been co-leading the administrative process team, which includes representatives from various offices to improve communication between offices. Harvey will retain this responsibility and oversee of the environmental health and safety from her new position.

In addition to a new office, Harvey will help ensure that all University departments remain in compliance with regulations, laws and internal policies.

Harvey's former office is just completing the search for her replacement and expects to have someone in place by October, McCrudden said.

Harvey said her promotion is part of a recent trend in higher education to expand the risk management area at many universities.

"Continuing to be proactive in helping departments understand all types of risks just seems like a natural progression," she said. "My aspiration is that I will be more involved in a greater variety of administration activities."

She said she is excited to help her new boss carry out his vision of the University and to become involved in more administrative activities outside of risk management.
