Best school in the third-best list

It's all about the competition. And recently, competition has grown stiffer than ever before.

It's not the rivals that have become tougher. Rather, it's the judges.

Long ago, it used to be that Princeton was content being simply the best. And rightfully so. Then, when some other, unmentionable imposters appeared on the scene, we were proud to assume our rightful position as the best of the best. All very justifiable, clearly.

But sometimes it's not enough just to be the best. Or even the best of the best, for that matter. Nowadays, it's only the best of the best of the best that count.

Everyone knows that Princeton was ranked as the number one university in the country by U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges.

But did anyone ever stop to wonder, exactly how good is this ranking? Is this a source that's up to snuff?

In other words, is this rating rated?

Lovers of obsessive order, fiends of fanatical evaluation and reevaluation, never fear. The answer is, of course, it is.

The College of Wooster puts out an annual survey of first-year students, now in its twelfth year. Along with the more conventional questions, such as the relative popularity of printed college information guidebooks versus that of the web, 532 students from 39 states and 14 countries were asked their preferences in college ranking authorities.

It may not come as a surprise that America's Best Colleges has been ranked number one for seven years, consecutively.

But this year brought some scandalous news: America's Best Colleges surrendered its position! Who is this strangely victorious ouster? The Princeton Review: The 331 Best Colleges.

Before the outbreak of campus-wide anguish and fury, something should be made clear.

The Princeton Review has a category called "best overall academic experience for undergraduates." Currently holding the position of number one in this category is none other than Princeton University. Three cheers for Old Nassau.

It may be that these lists run the danger of engendering an endless and ridiculous cycle with the potential of becoming positively vicious. But it doesn't matter. Any way you look at it, Princeton is still number one.
