Health officials in Philadelphia explained that Ross' death is suspected to have been caused by meningitis type B, the same strain which caused the meningitis outbreak at the University in the fall. The University experienced an outbreak of meningitis type B in 2013 which affected seven students and a campus visitor. The outbreak prompted the University to import a vaccine not approved in the U.S. in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Drexel offered prophylactic antibiotics for any student who was in close contact with Ross.
