Finding a religious community in Princeton's academic world

God may not attend Princeton, but many students say that He has a place here. Despite academia's somewhat secular nature and the challenges presented by a busy college lifestyle, students have continued the religious practices they observed before college with the support of small religious communities across campus.Rena Lauer '05 said that compared to other universities, the tight-knit community of Orthodox Jews at Princeton has let her be a leader in several areas."It's very easy to slip through the cracks and not have a voice in your community," she said of religious life elsewhere.The abundance of opportunities to play an active and influential role in the Jewish community was one of the main reasons Lauer chose to come to the University, she said.

The masters and their plans

Lee Mitchell Butler CollegeIn searching for a new master of Butler College, University deans Kathleen Deignan and Nancy Malkiel conducted years of interviews with numerous candidates.They sought someone who is "deeply committed to undergraduate education," has a good track record and cares about students, said Malkiel, dean of the college.After completing the process, they decided on Lee Mitchell, the Holmes Professor of Belles-Lettres in the Department of English.

A place to call home

Princeton instituted its residential college system 20 years ago to provide students with a friendly, personal environment to help smooth the transition to University life.The residential colleges ? Butler, Forbes, Mathey, Rockefeller and Wilson ? supply students with dining options, places for studying and relaxing and opportunities to pursue athletic, artistic and political interests.Students pay a social fee to their colleges along with their tuition, and colleges provide special events such as study breaks and trips to Broadway shows and sporting events at discounted prices.
