Column: Ghosts of Princeton past?

The final buzzer that ended the men’s basketball team’s 72-66 victory over Columbia this weekend doubled as a death knell for the Lions’ conference title hopes. They entered the winter as the Ancient Eight’s consensus dark horse, the only team that might be capable of challenging Princeton and Harvard atop of the standings. Now, Columbia is merely the latest example of the ruthlessness of the 14-Game Tournament.

Fencing: Men upend No. 1 Buckeyes in comeback thriller

Having already lost a tough 14-13 match against No. 3 Notre Dame, the No. 4 Tigers found themselves in the rare position of looking outmatched. The men’s and women’s teams are used to being the dominant powers in almost any arena — both went undefeated in the Ivy League last year and finished second in the NCAA. The women came into the Northwestern Duals undefeated, while the men had lost only once, to No. 2 Penn State at the Vassar Duals in December.

Track: Returning to full strength, Princeton off to good start

As the indoor track season rolls into February, the Tigers are starting to look fit and dangerous. Coming back from several weeks of training free from competitions, the men’s and women’s track teams fired back into action at the end of winter break and have been racing off the cobwebs throughout January.

Hockey: Men and women keep playoff hopes alive

After two weeks off, the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams were back in action over the break with three games apiece. Three consecutive wins helped improve the women’s team to 9-12-2 overall and 4-10-2 in the ECAC. The Tigers currently sit in eighth place in the league with 10 points, but Colgate and Yale follow them closely in the hunt for the final playoff spot. The men started off Intersession with a win, but the momentum did not continue as they dropped their next two games on the road, leaving them with a 7-10-4 overall record and a 5-6-3 record in the ECAC. The Tigers are one of five teams currently tied at 13 points.

Swimming: Crimson edges out Tigers at HYP, Bulldogs finish a distant third

The annual HYP meet is always one of the biggest meets of the year for the men’s swimming and diving teams. This year’s showdown was no exception — in fact, the stakes were even higher. Harvard, Yale and Princeton each came into the weekend undefeated. The Tigers, the four-time reigning Ivy League champions, looked to improve on their 5-0 record, while Harvard and Yale came in with six and seven unanswered wins respectively.

Women's Basketball: Cagers continue to run Ivy table

The women’s basketball team returned from its finals hiatus to trounce two Ivy League opponents, Cornell and Columbia, by a combined 77 points. The Tigers (12-5 overall, 3-0 Ivy) opened their weekend on Friday night against the Big Red (10-8, 2-2) in Ithaca. Senior guard Niveen Rasheed led the team with 21 points off 9-12 field goal shooting while sophomore guard Blake Dietrick came off the bench to contribute a career-high 17 points on only 8 shots. For the game, the Tigers shot a blistering 59 percent from the field and held Cornell to 31 percent shooting. Princeton outscored Cornell 46-18 in the paint and 18-2 on fast break points and outrebounded the Big Red 42-26. The Tiger’s bench outscored Cornell’s 40-15, and Princeton never trailed during the game, cruising to a 77-46 victory.

Men's Basketball: Tigers maintain Ivy League perfection

Princeton men’s basketball (10-7 overall) stayed perfect in the Ivy League this weekend, defeating both Cornell 76-59 on Friday and Columbia 72-66 on Saturday to attain the perfect 3-0 mark.The Tigers got off to a slow start against Cornell, trailing 17-8 early. But they rallied to take a 35-30 lead going into halftime and continued to build the lead, which was as large as 21 points with two minutes to go in the game. Despite feeling the pressure of the Cornell defense early, Princeton still shot 53 percent from the field on the game.

With 6:01 remaining in the first period of the men's hockey team's matchup against Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon, the Tigers surged forward after earning the power play. Freshman forward Mike Ambrosia orchestrated a nifty give-and-go from the wing, exchanging quick passes across the ice with junior defenseman Alec Rush before finding space in front of the Engineers' net.

Column: Henderson finds right rotation for Princeton

At the start of the 2012-13 season, head men's basketball coach Mitch Henderson '98 had lots of options in filling out his five-man lineup, with few obvious solutions. Senior forward Ian Hummer and junior point guard T.J. Bray were mainstays from opening day, but Henderson went through several different looks for the other three positions; as Princeton blew leads against Northeastern, Rutgers and Wagner, the answer seemed out of reach.

A day after cruising to wins over Dartmouth, both Princeton squads won tight, hard-fought victories against Harvard, as the men and women each finished with 5-4 wins.

Led by junior point guard T.J. Bray, the men's basketball team started off Ivy League play with a home victory over rival Penn on Saturday. The Tigers (7-7 overall, 1-0 Ivy League) were playing against the Quakers (2-13, 0-1) for the first time since ending Penn's Ivy title hopes with a win in last year's regular-season finale. Revenge was not on the docket, however, as Princeton took the game by a score of 65-53.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — NCAA enforcers have descended on Harvard’s campus to investigate widespread allegations of misconduct inside and outside the classroom. Instead of the standard team for the Northeast, NCAA president Mark Emmert summoned a crack team of investigators from Birmingham, Ala., to spearhead the effort. They will investigate a wide variety of purported violations by both Crimson football and basketball.

Football: Coach refuses to start popular left-handed quarterback*

Head coach Bob Surace ’90 surprised fans this week by refusing to name left-handed sophomore Quinn Epperly the starting quarterback for the football team’s final game of the season. With rookie Kedric Bostic sidelined due to concussion symptoms, Surace will instead be turning back to a more conventional quarterback with right-handed sophomore Connor Michelsen, who was benched two weeks prior.
