Tourism spending in the Princeton area totaled $1.85 billion in 2012, even higher than spending before the 2008 recession, the Times of Trenton reported. In 2007, before the recession, tourists spent $1.7 billion in the area.

According to a study released by the Princeton Regional Chamber of Commerce, tourism spending in Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset counties increased for the third year in a row, bringing in $1.13 billion, $695.3 million and $42.5 million in 2012, respectively. Tourism spending in New Jersey totaled around $38 billion.

Most of Princeton's tourism revenue comes from shopping, recreation, entertainment and transportation, according to Brian Tyrrell, president and CEO of Travel and Tourism Research and Training Associates. He added that the local tourism job market has also bounced back from the recession better than the state and nationwide markets.
