The Department of Public Safety will relocate to a newly renovated facility at 200 Elm Drive, near Baker Rink, at the end of next month.
Director of Public Safety Steve Healy called the new location an "absolutely beautiful building." The department has been housed in Stanhope Hall since the early 1970s.
Public Safety staff will move into the building on Oct. 31, but the technical systems will not be transferred and installed until December, when the campus will be least affected by the transition of the equipment.
The main reason for the move is the current lack of space, Healy explained, noting that in Stanhope Hall, the department has been "packed in" as their ranks have grown.
The transition will not alter response time, as Public Safety has its officers patrolling campus by car, bike and foot, Healy said. But with the new facility will come vast improvements to the department, he added.
The new location was previously the boiler house for campus, and when the University planned to renovate the structure, Public Safety requested a portion of the building.
When Healy learned his department had been chosen for the new structure, he said he was delighted. "We're absolutely lucky."
