On Friday afternoon, the University notified the campus community that the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating the contents of a message posted on anonymous campus social media app Fizz that referenced school violence.

A post on Fizz, believed to have been published Wednesday night, included mentions of depression and school shootings. A separate post from Thursday includes a screenshot of the original post that reads, “Have you ever felt so depressed and isolated that you empathize w/ school shooters and feel satisfied seeing it?”

It has not been confirmed whether the TigerAlert was in reference to this specific post.

The original poster, whose identity has not been confirmed, wrote, “TW: (but won’t actually do),” appearing to reference school violence.

The message concluded, “Didn’t tell therapist since I feel this is reportable.”

In the comments of the Thursday post, an anonymous poster wrote that they had “reported” the original Wednesday night message.

The TigerAlert, sent on Friday afternoon, stated that DPS is investigating “a message that referenced school violence [that] was posted recently on the Princeton channel of the anonymous social media platform Fizz.”

Users must prove a Princeton affiliation to access the Princeton Fizz channel. However, the Fizz website clarifies that “while we use multiple methods to verify college affiliation for access to college-specific communities, we cannot guarantee that all users granted access are actively enrolled students.”

The Fizz privacy policy states that the app “is not currently affiliated with any school or education institution” and “will never disclose your identity or anonymous posts unless required by law or to law enforcement to ensure the safety of our communities.”

DPS and a University spokesperson declined to share more details at this time.
