Outrage at the denial of Jie's student visa
I believe I speak for the majority of undergraduates when I express my outrage that Wu Jie '07 has been unable to come to Princeton after being denied a student entry visa on the grounds that she might — despite her claims to the contrary — attempt to immigrate. Huh?
What would be the disaster if Wu Jie were to stay? Wouldn't this country benefit from the immigration of one of China's best and brightest — a description Wu Jie clearly fits? Apparently our government, willing to summarily dismiss the admissions decision of one of the leading universities in the country solely to prevent possible student immigration, values neither education nor intellectuals.
The other factor here, one that may well be at the root of most non-security-related immigration limits, is the specter of racism. Perhaps immigrants, despite typically loving this country's values more than the natives who take them for granted, would dilute our precious culture or bloodlines. We're also told that Wu Jie's chances of entry would have been better had her family been wealthier —ostensibly because she has insufficient reason to return to Beijing. This is a disturbing assertion.
This policy is misguided and should be changed. Evan Williams '05
