Kamara misunderstands flags
Steven Kamara's comment on the alleged vandalism against the PCACP flags on the Frist lawn is well argued and convincing. However, it completely misses the larger subject: the issue at hand is not vandalism, but intolerance to certain points of view on this campus, represented in the destruction of advertisements for events related to them. He argues convincingly that the flags are not legally protected and that they can be problematic for students who wish to use the lawn or enjoy it passively. However, two individuals tearing the flags out at night do not seem, to any extent of reason, to be doing so because they were unable to lounge on the lawn during the daytime.
Protesting the use of a community space for a political manifestation is fine; however, institutional channels should be used. Intolerant people have torn down posters for controversial activities — not on a single occasion, but on a number of them. This is the issue; why in a place such as this university, in which a "sharing" of ideas for intellectual discussion should be at the root of our experience, certain people (or groups) insist on prohibiting anything outside their paradigm of society to be aired.
