Letters to the Editor

I am writing in response to concerns that have been communicated to me, in e-mail and in person, about the decision to restructure SHARE.

After an extensive review that included suggestions from students, faculty, staff and members of Health Services as well as the SHARE office, it was decided to integrate SHARE more fully into the University Health Services.

Our primary goal in restructuring SHARE is to ensure the health and safety of the University community. By reorganizing multiple resources and bringing the SHARE office into the Counseling Center, we have the opportunity to strengthen SHARE, to create a team of professionals who can provide more comprehensive, multifaceted services and be more responsive to needs of the community. By locating SHARE in the Counseling Center, we can better coordinate peer advising and provide additional counseling services as required. Moreover, the team approach will help us develop more effective educational outreach. And most important, the team approach will ensure that all the needs of an individual seeking SHARE services are addressed.

I have pledged to work with students and all other concerned members of this community to sustain and augment the SHARE program and to assure that the resources available to it are not diminished. Janet Smith Dickerson Vice President for Campus Life
