CV of failures sparks conversation on academic successes

SinceAssistant Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs Johannes Haushofer released a “CV of Failures”on his Twitter in late April, the document has sparked a discussion on success on University campus.On April 23, Haushofer tweeted a link to a document in which he listed his failures, including six degree programs he did not get into, three academic positions and fellowships he did not get, nine awards and scholarships he did not receive, six paper rejections from academic journals and eight opportunities for research funding he did not attain.Haushofer said that he aims to continue to shed light on the invisibility of failures.“I’m hoping that [my CV of Failures] will be a source of perspective at times when things aren’t going well, especially for students and my fellow young researchers,” he said.According to Haushofer, he first wrote a CV of failures in 2011, shortly after a friend and colleague, Melanie Stefan, a lecturer at the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, proposed the idea in an article in the academic journal Nature.“A friend had had a professional setback and I wanted to show support, and this seemed like a good way of doing it.

Viloria discusses gender and sex as social constructs

Hida Viloria, founder and executive director of Intersex Campaign for Equality, said in a lecture on Thursday that s/he wants to encourage society to “challenge the binary” by thinking about sex and gender and recognizing the intersex community. Viloria is an intersex, gender fluid writer and activist who uses the gender pronouns s/he and he/r. Born in May 1968, Viloria is the author of a memoir to be released in March 2017, called "Born Both," and is an advocate of equal rights for intersex and nonbinary individuals.

New online room draw app attracts more than 1,900 students

Over 1,900 students have used the “Student Room Guide,” an upgraded version of a TigerApp released by the Undergraduate Student Government in early April to ease confusions in the room draw process, according to USG Housing Project member Pooja Patel '18. Patel is a former staff writer for the Daily Princetonian. The upgraded app serves as a tool to help students when choosing rooms for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Panel and exhibit feature civilian torture and execution by Syrian government

Thirty graphic photographs and five panelists highlighted the horrors of civilian torture under Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in an exhibit and a panel on Thursday. The explicit photographs on display were just thirty of over 55,000 photographs that make up a traveling exhibition known as “The Caesar Project,” according to a press release by the Wilson School.
