Men's Volleyball: Tuminelli, rookies crush Hope’s hopes

Last year, the men’s volleyball team opened the 2010 season with three losses during a California trip over Intersession. Despite last season’s slow start, Princeton fought its way through 10 five-set matches to win the program’s first Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association semifinal since 1998.

Column: Losing teams do not deserve playoff bids

The Seattle Seahawks made history this year. As pumped as they were to make the playoffs, they became the first team to advance to the NFL playoffs with a losing record (7-9). They made the playoffs by being the best team in a losing division. The four teams in the NFC West went a combined 25-39, easily earning the title of the worst division in football right now.

Swimming & Diving: Women sweep annual HYP meet

The women’s swimming and diving team found historic success at this weekend’s annual double-dual meet with Harvard (6-1 overall, 6-1 Ivy League) and Yale (5-3, 4-2), sweeping all 16 events and securing victories of margins greater than 100 points over both schools. Princeton’s (5-0, 5-0) strong performance extended the team’s dual meet winning streak to 37 and will likely accord the Tigers strong consideration for a national ranking.

Tennis: Tigers down No. 71 Nittany Lions

The men’s tennis team (1-0) started its season off well this weekend by defeating No. 71 Penn State 4-3 on Saturday at Jadwin Gymnasium. It was a full-team effort, as eight different Tigers earned victories in either doubles or singles.

Men's Hockey: Weekend wins extend hot streak to 9 of last 11

The No. 19 men’s hockey team traveled to upstate New York to gain a pair of ECAC Hockey league wins over the Intersession weekend. After defeating St. Lawrence 5-3 on Friday, Princeton (14-6-1 overall, 9-4-1 ECAC Hockey) scored nine seconds into the first overtime period to earn a 4-3 overtime victory against Clarkson (12-11-2, 6-6-1).

For the second consecutive year, the match between the men’s squash team and No. 2 Yale came down to the final shift. While the locale had changed, the result stayed the same. No. 3 Princeton (6-1 overall, 3-1 Ivy League) fell to the Bulldogs, 5-4, in a pivotal match in New Haven, Conn.

Men's Basketball: Tigers open with sweep

By the end of January, most men’s basketball teams are already well into conference play. Due to the program-wide exam break, however, Princeton's team is different: as of Friday morning, it was one of only two schools that had not played a league game out of 339 conference-affiliated Division 1 teams. When the Brown Bears visited Jadwin Gymnasium that evening, sophomore center Brendan Connolly won the jump ball and senior guard Dan Mavraides walked it across midcourt, officially kicking off the Tigers’ 14-game Ivy League season.

Women's Hockey: Princeton settles for split despite career-high 41 saves from Weber

It had been three weeks since the women’s hockey team last competed when they stepped back onto the ice this weekend and hosted conference rivals St. Lawrence (12-13-2 overall, 7-8 ECAC Hockey) and Clarkson (11-13-3, 8-6-1). The Tigers (11-11-1, 8-7-1) entered the weekend on a seven game winning streak. They extended it to eight on Friday night when they defeated St. Lawrence 4-0. But on Saturday afternoon, Clarkson defeated the Orange and Black 3-2, ending the run at a crucial point in the season.

Men's Basketball: Ivy season kicks off against Bears

After winning nine of its last 10 games to earn the No. 21 ranking in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll, the men’s basketball team is set to begin its Ivy League campaign during Intersession, with back-to-back contests against Brown (6-7) and Yale (7-7) in Jadwin Gymnasium. Five days before it begins conference play, Princeton (11-4) will take on The College of New Jersey (3-11) in its last nonconference game of the season.

For most students at Princeton, Intersession will be a vacation — a chance to cool down after the marathon of reading period and finals week. For the men’s and women’s track and field teams, however, the work is far from over. Squash: After long layoff, men, women return to courts for key matches against Bulldogs

After nearly a month-and-a-half hiatus from competitive matches, both men’s and women’s squash will resume play over Intersession and try to extend their undefeated seasons. The squads have handily dealt with each of their five opponents so far this season, and are hoping to extend the unbeaten streak to seven matches when they take on Penn on Jan. 26 at Jadwin Gymnasium and Yale on Jan. 29 in New Haven, Conn.

Column: As we leave, some parting shots

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at things), our reign as sports editors for the 134th managing board of The Daily Princetonian has finally come to its end. It was only a few years ago that we signed up as contributors, expecting to spend two hours a week at a soccer game and another hour writing up coverage. Before we knew it, we were spending 20 hours a week in the newsroom editing articles, yelling at staff writers and watching helplessly as our GPAs plummeted. Presumably, this was worth it.

Hit show ‘On The Prowl’ acquired by ESPN in blockbuster purchase

After a semester of astonishing viewership levels, The Daily Princetonian’s hit sports videocast “On The Prowl” has been acquired by ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports. The show will move to Channel 54 on TigerTV effective February.
