Women's Hockey: Princeton takes 7-game win streak into games with St. Lawrence, Clarkson

Having just recently beaten both the Saints and the Golden Knights on the road, this is a prime opportunity for the Tigers to claw back into the conference title race. They currently rank third in ECAC Hockey, trailing No. 2 Cornell (15-1, 10-0) and Quinnipiac (15-7-1, 8-6) by five and one points, respectively. By extending its winning streak to nine games, Princeton would leap into second place, right on the heels of league power Cornell.

The Tigers’ seven-game run has received national attention. In the most recent USCHO.com national poll, which ranks the top 10 NCAA women’s hockey teams, Princeton collected four points, technically placing it in a tie for No. 13. The Tigers can possibly crack the top 10 with solid victories during Intersession.

While Princeton puts hockey aside to study for exams, both other teams will be playing a heavy schedule. St. Lawrence will play four games before it faces the Tigers; Clarkson will play five. Coming off a two-week layoff, look for other teams to play aggressively from the opening faceoff to try and steal an early lead.

On Jan. 28, St. Lawrence, the team that stopped Weber’s impressive streak at 289 minutes, 38 seconds, will come to Baker Rink in hopes of ending another of Weber’s accomplishments. Weber has not yielded a goal at home since a Dec. 10 game against Syracuse, a total of 187 minutes, 39 seconds of play.

If this past weekend’s game was any indicator, special teams will be key against the Saints. Two of the Tigers’ three goals came on the power play, including freshman forward Olivia Mucha’s game-winner. St. Lawrence does not take many penalties, only racking up six minutes in the previous game, so Princeton will need to be opportunistic. The Tigers, on the other hand, were relatively undisciplined, taking over 20 minutes of penalties, most coming from a 10-minute game misconduct and five-minute major for hitting from behind called on sophomore defender Krystyna Bellisario.

The next day, Jan. 29, Clarkson will attempt to avenge its recent 2-0 loss in the matchup. Senior defender Sasha Sherry drew first blood late in the first period and Weber’s 18 saves conserved the lead. Worrisome for the Tigers, they were outshot 8-2 in the second period, a discrepancy they need to correct to compete.

If the Tigers manage to sweep the weekend’s games, it will be their first nine-game winning streak since the 2005-06 season. One of the most successful seasons in program history, that team won a record 21 games before losing in the NCAA quarterfinals against Minnesota. This year’s Tigers hope to repeat — and one-up — that team’s achievements.
