Squash: Both teams sweep pair as 2011-12 slate starts

The success the men’s squash team experienced their first weekend reflects only a small part of the sense of teamwork that’s been building up before the season even began. The women’s squash team topped its male counterparts, beating both F&M and Middlebury in perfect 9-0 sweeps. Remarkably, Princeton has yet to lose even an individual game in the 54 total played, with each Tiger winning by 3-0 scores.

Women's Hockey: Defense falters in twin home defeats

Penalties and power plays were the three big “P”s at Baker Rink this weekend, and the women’s hockey team came out on the losing side. The Tigers fell to No. 3 Cornell 3-1 on Friday and lost to Colgate 3-0 on Saturday, extending their losing streak to four games.

Cross Country: Banfich takes program-best 5th at NCAAs

Even though her team struggled during the season, senior cross country captain Alex Banfich never failed to bring her best. Despite traveling to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday without a team, the three-time All-America proved that she is truly one of the best distance runners in the nation. Banfich powered down the final stretch of the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course to claim fifth place overall, the best finish ever for a Princeton cross country individual.

Men's Basketball: Princeton leads entire game for Henderson’s first victory

The men’s basketball team secured a 61-53 win over visiting Buffalo courtesy of a fabulous first-half performance. Princeton won for the first time this season, also marking the first victory for head coach Mitch Henderson ’98. The win suggests that last season’s success may not be as far-fetched a standard to emulate as the opening losses had indicated.

Men's Water Polo: Tigers drop Navy to take Eastern title

The men’s water polo team is the 2011 CWPA Eastern champion. To reach the finals, the Tigers defeated returning champion St. Francis 13-11 in overtime. Playing against Navy for the title, Princeton won 10-7 to earn a spot in the Final Four at the NCAA Tournament in Berkeley, Calif.

Wrestling: Kolodzik and Frey push wrestlers to 4th place in Keystone Open

On Sunday, the wrestling team battled in the Keystone Open, where they finished fourth ahead of several rival Ivy League teams, including Penn and Harvard. Both junior 125-pounder Garrett Frey and senior 157-pounder Daniel Kolodzik made their way to the championship match of their weight classes, and six wrestlers finished in the top six of their classes. It was a resounding success for Princeton, which rebounded from losing their first two matches at the beginning of the weekend.

Women's Basketball: Stifling defense produces big win

The women’s basketball team provided a defensive surge in the second half against Villanova to dissipate the Wildcats’ offense and earn a decisive 56-41 victory. This win gives Princeton its biggest win of the season so far while delivering the Wildcats their first loss of the year.

Football: Epperly’s start can’t hide team’s faults

The football team lost its final game of the season at Dartmouth by a score of 24-17 this past Saturday, giving the Tigers a final record of 1-9 overall and 1-6 in the Ivy League. A field goal early in the third quarter gave the Tigers a 17-15 lead, but that was the last time the Tigers put points on the board, and a touchdown and field goal by Dartmouth were enough to get the hosts past the Tigers.

As the Tigers head up to Boston for Eastern Championships, they will play not only for glory, but also for an extension of their postseason. This tournament, hosted by Harvard, will be the season’s last for all teams except the Eastern Champion, which will represent the coast at NCAA Championships.

The men’s hockey team will certainly have its hands full this weekend as it hits the road and takes on two nationally ranked conference opponents. On Friday, Princeton (2-4-1 overall, 2-3 ECAC Hockey) will battle No. 18 Cornell (3-2, 3-1) before finishing the series on Saturday against No. 17 Colgate (6-4-1, 2-2). It is still early in the conference season, but the Tigers can leap to the front of the pack with two victories this weekend.

Football: Ground matchups favor visitors in season finale

If the football team were playing with rules from 1911 — when the forward pass was legal but restricted and few teams used it as an offensive weapon — it might be near the top of the Ivy League. The Tigers lead the league in rushing yards and rank second to conference champion Harvard in run defense. But after a 33-24 loss to Yale, in which Princeton outgained the Bulldogs 277-121 on the ground with only eight more attempts, the Tigers have just one win heading into Saturday’s season finale at Dartmouth.
