Basketball: In the service of Princeton hoops

It is a commonly known fact that college basketball, particularly at the Division I level, is a lucrative enterprise. CBS and Time Warner bought joint ownership of the NCAA Tournament television rights for $10.8 billion, and athletic departments around the nation dedicate hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars to support their programs. Much of the legwork for this fundraising falls on booster and friends groups.

He led the Tigers with a .304 batting average in his rookie year while mostly playing first base and has continued to produce this season since moving to the outfield, batting .278 and ranking second on the team with a .378 on-base percentage.

Around the Ivies: Harvard tops list of title contenders

Though the softball team split its first four Ivy League doubleheaders, four losses at the hands of Penn last week left Princeton at 4-8 in conference play and in third place in the South Division. With only eight games remaining against league opponents, the Tigers need several more wins to keep hopes of a conference championship alive. Here is a look at how the rest of the Ancient Eight has fared this season.

Softball: Penn sweeps Princeton in 4-game series

After splitting games with Harvard and Dartmouth last weekend on the road, the softball team looked for a strong showing at Penn this weekend. Unfortunately for the Tigers (13-21 overall, 4-8 Ivy League), the Quakers were impregnable at home and swept a pair of doubleheaders. Princeton now stands three games back in the Ivy League South Division after Penn (14-6-1, 6-6) took all four games, winning 4-2 and 2-1 on Friday and 7-2 and 9-2 on Sunday.

Crew: Crimson edges out Tigers

While the No. 1 men’s lightweight and the No. 1 women’s open crews pulled off solid victories away from home Saturday morning, the No. 4 men’s heavyweight team could not please the home crowd at Lake Carnegie, losing to perennial rival No. 3 Harvard by just over a second in the annual Compton Cup.

Baseball: Tigers claim sole possession of division lead

A sweep of Sunday’s doubleheader against Penn gave the men’s baseball team sole possession of first place in the Lou Gehrig division of the Ivy League. Despite splitting the first doubleheader to remain tied atop the standings with the Quakers (16-15 overall, 7-5 Ivy League), the Tigers (15-16, 9-3) came from behind to pull off close victories in both of Sunday’s games at Penn’s Meiklejohn Stadium.

With just under three and a half minutes remaining, sophomore midfielder Charlotte Davis found the net, bringing the No. 12 women’s lacrosse team within one goal of Harvard for the first time since the opening minutes. Harvard gained control of the final draw and began playing keep-away in their offensive end, hoping to hold onto the 9-8 lead as the final minutes ticked away.

Column: Previewing the NBA Playoffs: Eastern Conference

This first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs is rather like the boring dinner that precedes a delicious dessert. I could hardly blame a fan for saving most of his or her basketball appetite for what should be two brilliant second-round matchups: Heat vs. Celtics and Bulls vs. Magic or Hawks. In short, round one of the East is likely to be very uncompetitive.

Tennis: Princeton plays for Ivy title

The No. 58 men’s tennis team faces Columbia on Friday and then will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., for a showdown against No. 50 Cornell with an Ivy League championship and an undefeated season possibly on the line. The Tigers (12-6 overall, 5-0 Ivy League) hope that they can finally win an Ivy League match by more than the smallest margin of victory, having defeated Penn, Brown, Yale, Dartmouth and Harvard by identical 4-3 scores.
