Baseball: Tigers open season with Florida split

The baseball team opened its campaign to defend its 2011 Ivy League title by splitting a four-game series with Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. The two wins are an encouraging sign for the Tigers, as they came up against an Owls team two weeks removed from a three-game sweep of Alabama, which plays in the powerful Southeastern Conference.

Squash: Harrity and Cerullo fall in individual semifinals

Over the weekend, five members from both the women’s and men’s squash teams competed in the CSA Individual Championships at Amherst. Both the women’s and men’s squash teams' No. 1 players — junior Julie Cerullo, who entered the tournament ranked No. 5, and junior Todd Harrity, the returning individual champion from last year — fell in the semifinals round, ending the squash season outright.

Women's Lacrosse: Duke’s 4-goal run too much for hosts

Despite late comeback surges at the end of both halves, the women’s lacrosse team was never able to even the score against Duke on Saturday afternoon. The No. 7 Tigers (1-2) scored first, but the third-ranked Blue Devils (5-2) answered with three goals in less than five minutes to take the lead, which they held for the remainder of the game.

Men's Lacrosse: No. 2 Blue Jays solve Princeton’s defense

Longtime rival No. 2 Johns Hopkins overtook the men’s lacrosse team 10-8 on a chilly Friday night in a game that coupled few Tiger offensive opportunities with big-time goal capitalization by the Blue Jays (4-0). The loss gives Princeton (2-1) its first loss of the season as it tries to reestablish the strength of the program after a lackluster past year.

Men's Hockey: Bulldogs too much to handle in playoffs

With a game-winning goal 33 seconds into overtime of game two, sophomore forward Andrew Calof brought the men’s hockey team off of the brink of elimination and into a third game of its first-round series. But the Tigers’ reprieve lasted only 24 hours, as Yale led start to finish for a 7-3 victory in Sunday’s deciding game. Princeton was eliminated in the first round of the ECAC Tournament for a third straight year.

Wrestling: Frey reaches EIWA finals at Jadwin

It was an exciting weekend for the wrestling team. Princeton hosted the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships in Jadwin Gymnasium for the first time since 1987. And two grapplers, senior captain Daniel Kolodzik and junior captain Garrett Frey, performed well enough to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, which will take place in St. Louis on March 15-17.

One can only wonder what could have been if the men’s basketball team had been playing as well as it has recently from the beginning of the Ivy League season. Princeton (18-11 overall, 9-4 Ivy League) continued to roll over its opposition this weekend, as it dashed Yale’s slim hopes of a title and sent Brown scurrying back to Providence.

Men's Lacrosse: Hopkins visits for ESPNU showdown

It may be early in the season, but the men’s lacrosse team will face an important rival this Friday, when No. 12 Princeton (2-0) will host No. 2 Johns Hopkins (3-0) at Sherrerd Field in the 82nd meeting between the Tigers and the Blue Jays. For both teams, this will be their first ranked opponent of the year and an opportunity to make a statement in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.

That’s what the men’s hockey team plans on doing often against Yale in a three-game series in New Haven this weekend. The series opens up what the Tigers hope to be a deep run in the ECAC Hockey tournament, for which they are the 11th seed of 12 teams.

The women’s lacrosse team is looking to bounce back from an upset loss to Rutgers when it takes on No. 5 Duke at home on Saturday. The Tigers were shocked in double overtime on Wednesday by the Scarlet Knights and are looking to make up for it with what would be a very impressive victory over Duke.

Softball: 48-game season opens in Maryland

Spring may still be 18 days away, but already the weather is beginning to turn, just in the nick of time for the start of the softball team’s 2012 campaign. This weekend, the Tigers will travel to Baltimore, Md., to compete in the UMBC Invitational.

Women's Basketball: Ivy champions face tough weekend trip

The women’s basketball team will be on the road this weekend to play against Yale on Friday and Brown on Saturday in its last away games of the regular season. Princeton (21-4 overall, 11-0 Ivy League) clinched its third consecutive Ivy League title after last weekend’s victories over Harvard, 74-44, and Dartmouth, 94-57, and is now looking to close the season out strong.

After winning its first game 16-3, the women’s lacrosse team faced a tighter game on Wednesday. No. 8 Princeton played from behind for most of the game and came back to force overtime, but Rutgers had the final word, winning 11-10 in the second extra frame.

Men's Lacrosse: For star sophomore, family comes first

At the start of his second season, sophomore midfielder Tom Schreiber is already a leader on the men’s lacrosse team. Last season, injuries forced him into that role. This season, he’s ready and willing to lead.“He’s one of our best players,” head coach Chris Bates said. “He helps quarterback our offense. He’s the guy that really leads by example.”

Men's Volleyball: Finally home, surging Tigers drop Rutgers-Newark

Nearly one month into the season, the men’s volleyball team finally made its home debut on Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory over Rutgers-Newark. The 25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19 win moves the Tigers into a second-place tie with St. Francis in the EIVA standings.
