Economics professor Alan Blinder ’67 presented a public lecture on the economic downturn and potential recovery on Monday night titled “Storm Clouds Rising: Are There Ways Out.” “I was thinking I would just call this lecture: ‘The Mess,’ ” Blinder joked, underscoring the somewhat pessimistic tone of the lecture, which was part of the Wilson School’s Economic Recovery Series.

Lecturer calls health, due process ‘human rights’

In a lecture titled “Investigating Health and Human Rights Abuse” on Sunday evening, Wilson School visiting lecturer Joseph Amon described health as a “human right.”“Human rights are really about how people with certain health conditions are subject to discrimination,” Amon said, citing examples such as how people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS are shunned by their communities.

Princeton Packet up for sale

Princeton media institution The Packet Media Group — composed of the Princeton Packet and its 10 sister newspapers — and its Princeton property on Witherspoon Street, are up for sale, according to a statement by James Kilgore, the president and owner of the newspaper publishing company. The Packet is home to over 100 employees.

Sittenfeld ’07 elected Cincinnati council member

Cincinnati City Council member P.G. Sittenfeld ’07 became the youngest Cincinnati city council member ever when he won the election with 30,474 votes, the second-highest number of votes, last Tuesday.

The sudden birth of the Arab Spring took even the most seasoned State Department diplomats by surprise, former U.S. ambassador to Yemen Barbara Bodine said in a lecture titled “A Time for Every Season: Assessing the Arab Spring” in Jadwin Hall on Saturday morning.

Survey conducted on rush ban

The implementation of the ban on freshman affiliation with a fraternity or sorority was furthered last week, as an online survey soliciting suggestions on how to administer the new policy was made available to students on Thursday.

Princeton released its third annual Sustainability Report on Nov. 9, confirming its progress in sustainable practices on campus, including a 2.6 percent reduction in greenhouse emissions from 2008 and a 13 percent decrease in water and landfill waste since 2006.

Politics professor emeritus Richard Falk rejected a debate challenge from Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz over a book titled “The Wandering Who?”, by Gilad Atzmon, after Falk endorsed the book and Dershowitz described it as “anti-Semitic.”
