News & Notes: Gallup ’53, son of Gallup Poll founder, dies at 81

After graduating from the University with a degree in religion, Gallup worked for his father’s company until retiring in 2004. Gallup expanded the company’s polling beyond politics into topics like religion. He also wrote several books about religion, including “The Next American Spirituality” in 2002 and “The Saints Among Us” in 1992.

Gallup is survived by three children. One of his daughters, Alison Gallup, called her father “an unusual guy, the warmest, most approachable person you’ve ever met,” and added that he was known for his morals.

“He has left an incredible legacy of ethics ... I’ve never seen him do anything duplicitous,” she said.

A memorial will be held for Gallup in the University Chapel on Jan. 14 at 11 a.m.

The American Institute of Public Opinion, the organization that later became The Gallup Organization, was founded by Gallup’s father in 1935. The organization became well-known after successfully predicting Franklin Roosevelt’s 1936 presidential victory.

After Gallup Sr.’s death in 1984, the organization was sold to Selection Research while retaining its name.
