The professor-columnist: Paul Krugman

Every Thursday, Paul Krugman wakes up, drinks a cup of coffee, opens up his laptop and chooses the 800 words that will appear on the opinion page of The New York Times. But if Krugman can’t send the piece to his editors by the time he sits for Thursday office hours, then he closes his laptop and brings the column with him to Robertson Hall, writing while students cycle in and out of his office.

Spike in size of Wilson School prerequisites may offer clue into future size of school

The numbers of students enrolled in the only two courses available this semester that satisfy the new statistics prerequisite for Wilson School undergraduate admission have increased drastically, a potential sign that the number of students concentrating in the Wilson School could increase now that the major has scrapped selective admission.Last fall, 48 students took POL 345: Quantitative Analysis and Politics. But in this year’s course, 121 students are enrolled: a 250-percent increase in enrollment.

Petraeus GS ’87 resigns as CIA director following affair

David Petraeus GS ’87, the prominent former military general who has expressed interest in one day serving as University president, resigned from his position as CIA director Friday after disclosing he had carried out an extramarital affair.Though the scandal immediately casts doubts on Petraeus’ attractiveness as an Ivy League president, it also puts him back in the job market as the University’s presidential search committee builds its list of potential candidates.

Joint hurricane response provides a look into consolidated government

Two weeks ago, when the Princeton Borough and Princeton Township mobilized their resources to assist those affected by Hurricane Sandy, there was little separation of efforts. The two municipalities opened up a joint Emergency Operations Center. From this central location, workers responded to emergency calls from both municipalities. Borough Police Captain Nick Sutter and Township Police Sergeant Michael Cifelli handled police communications together.

Yale names president, clearing presidential search field

Yale, one of two other Ivy League schools that had been searching for a new university president at the same time as Princeton, named its next president on Thursday following a short three-month selection process. Yale’s announcement potentially simplifies Princeton’s search as the New Haven school will no longer compete with Princeton for presidential candidates. Dartmouth is also searching for a new president.

USG delays publication of COMBO survey results to complete full analysis

The USG previewed the results of the Committee on Background and Opportunity’s third survey at its Sept. 30 meeting, promising the results of the survey in the next two weeks. Yet, six weeks later, the results have still not been released.USG president Bruce Easop ’13 said the results of the comprehensive survey — which was designed to find links between a student’s ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation and his or her comfort on campus — has been delayed to ensure accuracy and thorough analysis.

Research expedited with new IRB review protocol

Research projects posing minimum risk to human subjects may be eligible for expedited review by the Institutional Review Board beginning this semester, a development that could make research easier for students working with human subjects.Up until this academic year, any student planning to conduct research involving human subjects has had to submit forms to the IRB and wait for the board to approve them at a monthly meeting before beginning research. Now projects posing minimum risk to participants may go through expedited review, which can simplify and quicken the approval process on a case-by-case basis.
