Lynne Cheney discusses role of patriotism in education

Lynne Cheney, former chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities and wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, called last night for American colleges and universities to institute core general education requirements, including required courses in American history."I suggest a general education requirement for all students so we can all participate in a general conversation," Cheney told an audience of over 300 in McCosh 50.Cheney, whose visit was sponsored by the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions, urged scholars to take on "broadly conceived" studies of American history.

DOE awards two professors fellowships for plasma research

Allan Reiman and Douglas McCune of the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab were awarded PPPL Distinguished Research and Engineering Fellowships last week.Reiman, a physicist at PPPL and a lecturer with the rank of professor in the astrophysical sciences department, was awarded the distinction for his role as head of the plasma configuration design group in the National Compact Stellarator Experiment.McCune, co-head of the Computational Plasma Physics Group at PPPL, was recognized for his work as creator of TRANSP software ? instrumental in analyzing fusion plasma experiments.The fellowships, consisting of a $5,000 grant and increased research independence, are awarded by the U.S.

Township seeks to curb deer numbers

Animal rights activists are questioning Princeton Township's new deer management program as the local government continues its plan to reduce the deer population.Under the plan, White Buffalo, a wildlife management firm from Connecticut, will be hired to catch deer and destroy them.

Federal government opposes professor's Internet copyright lawsuit

The federal government has filed a brief to block University professor Edward Felten from suing to overturn the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, alleging that the plaintiff's claim is "unripe." Laboratory mail tests negative for anthrax

University officials announced Nov. 21 that the powdery substance found in a catalog mailed to Lewis Thomas Lab tested negative for anthrax.Though the University employed an independent environmental safety team to analyze the suspicious substance to avoid the time delay associated with the state system, the state lab reported the results first.
