The Inter-Club Council elected Dan Hantman '03 as its new chair in a meeting Tuesday night.
Hantman, who is also president of Campus Club, will succeed Cindy Drakeman '02, the outgoing president of Tower Club.
He will oversee the ICC — a group comprising all the eating club presidents that sets overall 'Street' policy. Each club, however, makes decisions independent of the council.
Hantman will be the first ICC chair in three years not to serve concurrently as president of Tower Club.
Hantman said he is prepared to shoulder the great responsibility associated with this position. "We are the center of upperclass life for one of the preeminent institutions of higher education," he said. "We take that role — and that responsibility — very seriously."
In the past, ICC chairs have spent much of their time responding to negative perceptions of alcohol use at the clubs.
Hantman said the 'Street' has progressed in the right direction concerning alcohol use.
"We will keep the trend going: the trend towards being safe," he said. "We need to take a serious, honest look at what's going on."
He said he expects the club presidents to set a positive tone on this issue.
"We want the University [and larger] community to understand the very diverse set of roles the clubs play in campus life," Hantman wrote in an e-mail.
He pointed to the importance the clubs place on providing food and academic and social support. Those aspects are more important than the weekend parties at the 'Street,' he said.
Hantman expressed confidence in his fellow club presidents.

"This is a remarkably thoughtful group of club presidents who will make the most of an exciting opportunity to contribute to Princeton," he said.
