Racism claimed in student arrest

William “Mandela” Sheaffer ’13 was arrested by police in Bowling Green, Ohio, on Saturday morning, sparking a growing social media campaign claiming that his arrest was an “injustice” that resulted from racial profiling. The police have refuted this claim.The incident, which occurred one month after a black teenager in Florida was killed by a neighborhood watch captain in what some activists have called a hate crime, has prompted renewed concerns on campus about racial tensions nationwide.

New dean of Architecture School sparks controversy

World-renowned architect Alejandro Zaera-Polo will be the next dean of the School of Architecture, the University announced on Tuesday.Despite the support of his predecessor and others within the department, Zaera-Polo's appointment has been met with opposition from graduate students and doctoral candidates in the program, who say the School has been less than receptive to their opinions throughout the search process.

Slain teen inspires protest

Over 60 students staged a demonstration on campus that ended at Nassau Hall on Monday afternoon, the one-month anniversary of the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida.Demonstrations across the country spurred students to wear hooded sweatshirts and carry Skittles and Arizona Iced Tea, the same snacks that Martin purchased the night of the shooting, and gather in front of Nassau Hall.

Committee threatens ban on Greek organizations

n April 2010, President Shirley Tilghman told The Daily Princetonian that she would be “absolutely willing to have a conversation” about recognizing Greek organizations who made the concession to voluntarily delay rush until sophomore year.Nearly two years later, the University has banned freshman rush, but the conversation about the unrecognized status of fraternities and sororities has swung in the opposite direction.

U. considers new pub in Cafe Viv

The University is making progress toward reinstating a campus pub, which has evaded the campus for nearly three decades, to be potentially located in Cafe Viv, which is located in  Frist Campus Center.Last May, the Working Group on Campus Social and Residential Life recommended the return of the pub, which was previously located in the cafe in Chancellor Green. This semester, a steering committee will meet to consider issues surrounding its implementation, including food and beverage dispensation and hours of operation.

Other Ivies already delay pledging

After seven months of deliberation, the University unveiled on Sunday its recommendations for implementing the freshman-rush ban. However, Princeton is not the only school in the Ivy League determining how to enforce a ban on freshman rush.Yale is currently assessing how to implement the ban it announced in early March. Penn and Dartmouth already have well-established delayed-rush systems. Princeton’s policy of nonrecognition of fraternities and sororities puts it in a unique position among peer schools that have sought to delay rush, and, as a result, its policy looks different from the systems in place at other schools.

Committee: Suspend freshman pledges

Freshmen will be prohibited from attending formal and semiformal events held by Greek organizations, among other activities that affiliate freshmen with fraternities and sororities, beginning in the fall of 2012, according to the report of the Committee on Freshmen Rush Policy.In addition to explicitly enumerating the details on how the ban will be implemented, the report — which was released by the University at 2 p.m. today — threatens to ban fraternities and sororities altogether if there is not widespread compliance with the policy.

PCDO endorses Lempert for mayor

Princeton Township Deputy Mayor Liz Lempert received the Princeton Community Democratic Organization’s endorsement for mayor of the soon-to-be-consolidated Princeton, earning 61.4 percent of the votes cast at the PCDO’s meeting on Sunday evening. Meanwhile, four candidates received PCDO endorsements in the election for the new Princeton council to be elected this November.Lempert’s opponent, Kevin Wilkes ’83, received 34.8 percent of the vote of the 345 votes cast. The remaining votes did not support an endorsement of either candidate.
