Pride Week highlights U.'s LGBT-friendly reputation, supporters say

The University has been consistently ranked as one of the friendliest campuses for LGBT students nationwide. Last week’s Pride Week, which focused on strengthening the connection between allies and non-LGBT students to the on-campus LGBT movement, is only the latest of the many events and services offered by the Pride Alliance and other groups that contribute to the University’s high placement in these rankings.

Gas leak forces building evacuations

More than 200 people were evacuated from five University academic buildings and eight University-owned residential properties beginning at 1:37 p.m. on Monday afternoon due to an outside gas leak nearby, spilling students, faculty and staff into nearby courtyards.The Friend Center, the Computer Science Building, 185 Nassau Street — which houses the Lewis Center for the Arts — 41 William Street — the location of the Princeton University Press and the Program in Teacher Preparation — and 199/201 Nassau Street were evacuated. Princeton Borough Police Captain Nicholas Sutter said in an email that there were no injuries as a result of the incident.

Whitman to convert rooms

When Emmy Williams ’15 finished selecting her room for next year, she decided to trek up to the second floor of 1981 Hall to survey her future living space.“But when I saw my room had a window on the door, I told myself, ‘This is weird. This couldn’t be the right room,’ ” Williams said. Williams is also a copy editor for The Daily Princetonian.

Best-selling author and University alumna Jodi Picoult ’87 has returned with a new novel, “Lone Wolf,” released internationally last month. Picoult will visit campus on Thursday, April 19, to give a talk about her new novel at Whitman College.

Update: Buildings reopen after gas leak prompted evacuation

Occupants have been allowed to return to buildings that were evacuated this afternoon due to a gas leak, the University announced. Fire officials issued an all-clear of University buildings that were affected — the Friend Center, the Computer Science Building, 185 Nassau Street and 41 William Street, the University said.

The USG voted on Sunday night to remove U-Councilor Steven Lindsay ’12 from his position due to a failure to attend an adequate number of required USG meetings. The search process for a replacement to serve the rest of the year will begin with open interviews in the near future.

Orange Key interest steady

Despite the prospect of payment for what until recently was a volunteer organization, student interest in becoming an Orange Key tour guide has remained steady compared to last year.This year, 46 students out of the 98 applicants for the guide service were accepted, although more than 230 people had indicated interest through the information sessions that initiated the application process. The admissions rate of 47 percent remains comparable to last year and the year before, although the number of applications in total has increased.

Two days before the filing deadline for the primary election last Monday, the local Republicans announced a candidate for mayor of the consolidated Princeton municipality.Former mayor of Princeton Township and Princeton Borough Council President Richard Woodbridge ’65 declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination for mayor of Princeton last Friday. Woodbridge is currently a partner and an intellectual property lawyer at the law office of Fox Rothchild LLP in Lawrenceville.

On Thursday night, Josh Kornbluth, who came to the University in 1976 but is still waiting to receive his degree upon finishing his politics thesis this year, gave a presentation entitled “The Mathematics of Change: A Comic Monologue about Failure at Princeton.” Kornbluth reenacted the most disappointing moments of his freshman year at Princeton, failing to grasp introductory calculus or to pass the required undergraduate swim test.

Post office relocation met with resistance

The United States Postal Service is planning to relocate its office in Palmer Square to a smaller premise in downtown Princeton. The move would result in the sale of the Palmer Square building, which has met with resistance from the Princeton Borough Historic Preservation Review Committee and the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office due to its location in the Princeton Historic District.
