The central question facing the Committee on Discipline one night last year — a question that would contribute to the eventual verdict in a student plagiarism case — focused on a time stamp. If the time stamp on the student’s computer science assignment was altered, it would indicate the student had plagiarized and then presented fabricated evidence to the Committee before the hearing. The issue of the time stamp came up toward the tail end of the four-and-a-half-hour long hearing, late at night on March 13, 2013.

The town of Princeton received salt shipments this week which will be used to keep roads from icing and facilitate snow plowing, the Princeton Packet reported last week. Mayor Liz Lempert announced that critical salt shipments had arrived after a 100-ton order was delayed for weeks due to transportation issues.

News & Notes: U. students finish seventh in trading competition

A team of four University students finished in seventh place out of 52 teams at the Rotman International Trading Competition, the largest trading competition in the world. Teams from top universities in Italy, South Africa, Canada, Thailand, Egypt and the United States competed to maximize their profits in several rounds of simulated trading environments. The competition took place at the University of Toronto from Feb.

Chiang appointed director of Keller Center

Mung Chiang, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, was appointed director of the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education last Wednesday, the University announced. Chiang began his time at the University as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering in 2003, and has received many awards both for his teaching and for his research.

History professor Julian Zelizer said the political atmosphere between Latke Lovers and Hamentaschen Hubrists has become "more toxic, more poisonous and more rancorous"at the packed annual Latke-Hamentaschen Debate on Sunday afternoon. The debate involved the merits of two traditional Jewish foods: the latke and the hamentaschen.

USG Senate approves Jackson '15's revised Ivy Policy Conference funding proposal

A revised $4,000 funding request for the Ivy Policy Conference to be held on campus March 28-30 was approved at Sunday's USG Senate meeting with 19 votes in favor and three opposed to the proposal. The annual conference brings together representatives from all Ivy League universities to examine existing administrative policies and discuss improvements.

When the old Dinky station collapsed last September, Charles Jacobson ’16 was on his way to an interview with the Student Volunteer Council. Upon learning that the Dinky station had collapsed, he instantly ran to Dillon Gymnasium, where the fire squad car was parked, and went to the station to gear up and get into the truck.

News and Notes: Brief power outage in Witherspoon Hall

There was a brief power outage in Witherspoon Hall on Thursday at around 3:45 p.m.` An ice melt system that keeps snow from collecting on the steps experienced a short circuit, University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua explained in a statement.As a result, the building’s main circuit breaker tripped, which it’s designed to do, Mbugua said. It took the University staff about 45 minutes to isolate the circuit that was having an issue and then to reset the breaker. The power was completely restored to Witherspoon Hall at around 4:30 p.m.

Following Greening Princeton study, U. to streamline recycling process

Students at residential colleges will no longer have to sort their recyclable trash. The rest of campus is expected to follow suit by the end of 2014. Unlike the University’s current recycling system, which requires waste to be separated into paper, cans and bottles and “remaining trash,” single-stream recycling only distinguishes between contaminated and non-contaminated materials, Greening Princeton co-president Misha Semenov ’15 said.

Miller ’93: Finding solace for the dying

Dr. Bruce J. “BJ” Miller ’93 makes a living taking care of the dying. Miller, a palliative care specialist, was recently selected to receive one of the Project on Death in America’s annual Leadership Awards at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine’s 2014 Annual Assembly in San Diego, according to his co-worker Dr. Shelley Adler. In 2011, Miller became executive director of the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco.

Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke has joined the Brookings Institution, a bipartisan economic think tank, as a distinguished fellow in residence. Bernanke, who served two four-year terms at the Fed, was an economics professor at the University from 1985 until 2005.

News & Notes: Local claim against AvalonBay dismissed

Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobson dismissed a claim against real estate developer AvalonBay on Tuesday, the Trenton Times reported. A citizens’ group called Association for Planning at Hospital Site had gone before Judge Jacobson with the claim that AvalonBay, which hopes to convert the former Princeton hospital on Witherspoon Street into housing, had not properly addressed issues of dust levels, asbestos and medical waste disposal. The Association for Planning at Hospital Site argued against AvalonBay on the grounds that new development in the area needs to be more responsible.
