The complex, the future Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, seeks to introduce a new wave of architecture to campus, while the center’s design focuses on sustainability to demonstrate the University’s commitment to environmentalinitiatives.

At Cornell University, students have had the opportunity to pursue the academic program of Asian American Studies since 1987. On the other hand, while Princeton has certificate programs in African American Studies, Latino Studies and American Studies, it currently does not have a program in Asian American Studies. This is what the Asian American Students Association seeks to change.

When I was applying to colleges, I was looking for a place that would be good for running. Don’t get me wrong — I was interested in academic rigor, good food and all those good things you find in brochures, but the opportunity to run recreationally was essential. During my college visits, I ran on a trail that displayed images of the planets at proportional distances from one another at theUniversity of Wisconsin; I ran beside an endless strip mall near the University of Virginia; and I ran concentric laps around Duke University’s East Campus. I didn't want to simply take the word of admissions offices when they say that there are good places for students to run on campus — I wanted to experience it for myself; like seeing, running is believing.

Fifty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, an event that is the subject of this year's Academy Award-nominated film “Selma.” One scene of the film featured a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it portrayal of Malcolm X, the controversial civil rights activist and African-American Muslim minister. Malcolm X’s small role in the film mirrors the muted attention the forthcoming anniversary of his death has thus far received; the outspoken human rights advocate and Muslim minister was assassinated on February 21, 1965, 50 years ago this month.

In response to last Tuesday’s “blizzard of 2015,” otherwise known as “a huge miscalculation,” Princeton University closed for all “non-essential personnel” while employees designated “essential” remained on duty. The concept of non-essential personnel seems to make sense, as there are certain jobs that must be fulfilled even during emergencies to keep the small city that is the University in operation. However, the “non-essential” terminology raises humbling questions. Who, exactly, is essential to Princeton’s continued existence? The four qualities that follow are essentially essential to being Princeton’s chosen “essential.”

On Dec. 21, 1918, when Princeton hockey star and Baker Rink namesake, Hobey Baker, Class of 1914, was killed in action, he was part of a longtime warrior tradition at Princeton. The warrior ethos was integral to Princeton culture in the 19thand early 20thcenturies. According to Princeton historian and lecturer W. Barksdale Maynard ’88, Princeton students petitioned the federal government for the draft in 1917.

Between the monolithic bustle of Frist Campus Center and the postcard-perfect sector of North campus, Prospect House and its adjoining garden stand apart. While the Italianate villa and its small botanical garden currently serve as a faculty dining hall and gathering point for various segments of the Princeton community, the building has a remarkable history and has evolved in many ways over the years. From serving as a summer retreat for Southern slave-owners, to the much-protested home of the then-University President Woodrow Wilson Class of 1879, to the house’s ultra-modern redesign in the 1960s, Prospect House has participated in Princeton history, as well asAmerican history,in surprising ways.
