We envisioned the worst simply because college independence meant having to deal with problems and compromise beyond what we were used to in high school. We were used to chore lists on refrigerator doors. We had grown accustomed to sharing with our brothers and sisters, whether it was that last slice of cake or our favorite turquoise sweater. Many of us had been brought up to expect packed lunches to take with us in the morning or a parent to pick us up when we finished lacrosse practice early.

It used to be that my biggest problem regarding laundry was running out of clean underwear. For a lot of us, college is the first time we have to do our own laundry; a chance to learn how to properly separate loads and to determine which cycle on the dryer will heat our clothes to a steamy 105 degrees and which one will leave them soaking. Our foray into the world of laundry also forces us to figure out how much detergent is necessary and how much will cause a mini-flood of foam in the laundry room (some of us learned the hard way). Who could have known how important laundry technique would be? And that is not even taking into account the social aspects of doing laundry. Sure, it has been embarrassing at times to be sorting out bras in front of guys from the football team or realizing that a static-y sock is stuck to the back of your sweater, but for the most part laundry has become a more or less innocuous part of our weekly — or monthly — routines.

It usually works like this: You’re a senior in high school, and it’s the eve of your 18th birthday. You sit on your bed and contemplate the vague, nebulous concept of adulthood for a little while, usually in the form of “Oh no, if I decide to rob a bank now I’m completely responsible for my actions, oh god oh god oh god.” After midnight strikes, you might dive right into contemplating your newfound rights. Oh the traguses you’ll pierce and the infinity signs you’ll finally tattoo.

There was a time when I sat in my dimly lit room with nothing but the dust lining the corners of the walls to offer companionship. My heart craved human warmth, but my perpetual inactivity had caused severe atrophy in my legs, to the point where it took too much effort to move. In this dark puddle of lethargy, I discovered Snapchat. Using Snapchat, I could interact with my friends without leaving the comfort of my room. Snapchat has different timer settings and drawing options that span every color of the rainbow, and I quickly realized that I could reinvent myself and become whoever I wanted to be.

I’ve come to expect the very worst from laundry room users. My stuff has been thrown on the floor, split into various bins, taken out mid cycle, and stolen. Never in my wildest, laundry-focused fantasies would someone have folded my laundry into organized piles. But the fact that I’m still baffled by this unexpected kindness should attest to the issue at hand. The laundry room is an archetype of inconsiderate behavior, second only to shared bathrooms.

Four years ago, Sarah Porter had never run competitively. Today, the freshman is ready to make her mark on the women’s cross country team after arriving on Princeton’s campus from sunny Southern California only weeks ago. The ‘Prince’ talked to Sarah about the transition to life at college, her favorite prerace pump-up music and some aspects of competitive running that may come as a surprise.

How do people make this weighty decision, especially if it’s a free choice among equally good schools? I’ve talked to enough prospectives over the years to know that it’s not always a slam dunk, and little things can wind up making a big difference.

There are two primary factors contributing to my appreciation. One: I like the idea of establishing an achievable baseline for a daily sense of accomplishment. Too many days I find myself — and everyone I interact with — lamenting: “I’ve not done enough work.” This stems from to-do lists full of activities like ‘start problem set’ and ‘work on JP’ that I no doubt need to complete but aren’t unique to the day in question. As the days draw to a close, I never feel as if I’ve done enough because I’m always thinking of what the next step is. The principle of GTL offers a remedy to the feeling of inadequate work completion. It doesn’t say that nothing else is to be done, just that completing these three distinct activities meets a baseline for considering a day productive.

With the impending departure of the University Medical Center at Princeton to its new Plainsboro campus on Route 1, the Borough is faced with redeveloping the former hospital property, which consists of 9.8 acres in the heart of the town. The Borough Council met last night to discuss a zoning amendment to the site on Witherspoon Street, which would increase the number of proposed residential units from 280 homes to 324.

Eight games into his basketball career, freshman forward Denton Koon has already had an impact on his team. He is coming off of his best game of the season, in which he went six-for-seven from the field for 13 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds, four of them on the offensive glass, to help the Tigers beat Lafayette 69-54. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of his performance was the two dunks that fired up the home crowd.

As a residential college adviser, I was well prepared for most of the questions my advisees and other freshmen I interact with ask me. I knew to tell them that yes, the fire safety presentation is mandatory, to explain how they go about signing up for classes, and, for my ’zees in particular, to inform them of the sad news about just how far the closest printer and laundry room are. But by far the most commonly asked question by every freshman I’ve talked to is one I am not quite sure how to answer: “Is the drinking culture on campus always like this?”
