Andrea Campbell, the first Black woman to serve as president of the Boston City Council, is a Democratic candidate in Boston’s 2021 mayoral race. She previously chaired the Council’s Committee on Public Safety, where she sought to expand resources for formerly incarcerated residents and enact criminal-justice reform.

Campbell has spearheaded calls to reimagine Boston’s policing system. In June, she urged Mayor Martin Walsh and the City Council to reallocate $60 million from the Boston Police Department’s overtime budget and disburse the funds to “community-based organizations that are doing work with the root causes of violence.”

On Sept. 24, Campbell announced her candidacy for Mayor of Boston. At-large City Councilor Michelle Wu has also entered the race; incumbent Marty Walsh has not revealed whether he will seek reelection.

A Sociology major at Princeton, Campbell participated in both Thrive and She Roars. She was featured on Princeton Alumni Weekly’s Sept. 2020 cover and joined a panel hosted by the Association of Black Princeton Alumni last month.
