Weekend Picks: Sept. 24, 2009

Thursday night sees Terrace playing host to the electro-rap duo Dark Party, made up of DJs Eliot Lipp and Leo123. The pair describes its music rather bluntly as “Club / Club / Club,” and a quick listen to its MySpace confirms the tag — expect head-bobbing rhythms and eardrum-pounding beats, as well as a few classic hip-hop samples thrown in amid the chaos. Touring with them across the United States is Mux Mool, another fun-times electro DJ who should have no problem getting the party started. He actually played at the club last semester, delivering a strong opening set for the electronic wizard Nosaj Thing.

Saturday switches up the tempo with a performance from highly acclaimed experimental rockers The Books. Not every band can be credited with creating a genre of its own, but with The Books, the claim might not be far wrong. The duo specializes in a sort of “collage” music, pasting together bare-bones folk melodies, lightly strummed string instruments and a whole array of obscure samples, from filing cabinets to children’s toys. Fun fact: The French government hired the band to compose elevator music for the Ministry of Culture. Now, just reread that sentence. The Texan duo Lymbyc System will be opening for The Books, setting the tone with layered and dreamy electronic textures.
