Sandy Fong '12 is an internationally ranked shooter from New York. Last summer, Fong was the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic shooting team in Beijing.
Q: How long have you been shooting?
A: Six years.
Q: How did you first get into it?
A: My dad did it in high school, so he kind of picked it up about six years ago. He just really loved the sport, loved the people, and he decided to bring us along, my sister and me. We turned out to be rather good at it.
Q: Are you still shooting here?
A: There's a club team here. We've actually done really well [and] moved up in our ranking.
Q: What other campus activities are you involved in?
A: I'm also on club swimming. .
Q: What was it like competing in Beijing?
A: It's one of those things where there's so much hype about it, and it's just one of the few things that lives up and surpasses it. There's so much camaraderie amongst athletes and amongst countries. Everyone's really there to do their best and to compete among the best.
Q: How did you do?

A: I ended up 21st, so it was a good performance for me, and I was happy about it. I had only been competing internationally for about a year and a half at that time. Still going for 2012.
Q: Do people typically start shooting at around your age?
A: It's pretty normal for people to start at my age, but it's pretty rare for people to get to the level that I'm at, at my age. Generally for women shooters, they're in their mid-20s before they're internationally competitive. So I guess I got in there pretty early. It gives me the ability to kind of engage in a lot of other things because I have time to time of mature in this sport. And it's nice that the shooting heroes that I have are still shooting now, and I'm with them, and I'm competing with them, so they can kind of help me out whenever I'm abroad.
Q: What was your favorite part of the competition?
A: I like to compete. I'm a very competitive person, and when it gets to the match, I'm just really excited to compete, so I guess all of it?
Q: How do you feel about the association of guns and violence?
A: I think there is a lot of fear because guns are considered weapons, but if people are trained to use them properly, and as tools in sports, there really isn't a problem. Riflery is actually the safest sport that there is: A lot more people get hurt cheerleading or playing football. I think people are kind of wary because my sport involves rifles, but everyone is very conscious of how to use them properly, everyone's trained, and it's really not a problem.
