Dear Rob

Go out and meet people during freshman year. It's comfortable, no doubt, to spend every weekend with the people in your dorm. There are 1,200 special people in your class; hanging out with the same 12 is unnecessarily limiting. Meet as many as you can, and listen to their stories. Most of them should be pretty interesting.

Don't waste your breaks watching television at home. Go exploring, take a Pace Center trip, go home with a friend and see where he or she is from. You have the rest of your life to watch "The Office" and "Arrested Development" on DVD. Find something better to do with your free time in college. You'll miss all the vacations when you're working.

Stay for reunions all four years. There's no better way to learn about this place than to meet the older people who love it. And most of them are really fun, too. Their stories will change how you think about Princeton, almost always for the better.

Don't worry about taking tough classes. Even if you can't use a P/D/F, it's only one grade out of more than 30 you'll receive. No sense in spending the rest of your life wondering about the complexities of ancient Rome just to avoid a single bad grade on your transcript. It won't matter for much in the end, anyway.

Do one special thing every day. The real world isn't that exciting, and every day is basically the same. Enjoy college while it lasts because it will be over far too soon. As the fortune cookie once said, "Enjoy yourself. It's later than you think."
