New program seeks facilities managers

Student facilities managers will be paid $11 per hour and have half of their room charge covered. Electrical, plumbing and mechanical skills, and managerial experience are desired.

“A facilities manager makes it much easier to coordinate the logistical aspects of access to rooms, set up of equipment, post-event clean up,” Rockefeller College Dean Oliver Avens said. “In a student-driven programming environment, it makes sense to have students coordinating these practical matters with other students.”

Mathey-Rocky and Butler-Wilson each plan to employ one student facilities manager, while Whitman and Forbes will each hire one manager because the two are so far apart.

An increase in student-run activities within the colleges has created a need for on-call support, Avens explained. As the administration continues to base campus social life around the residential colleges, it will be useful to have a liaison between Building Services and students, he added.

Students are not over-enthusiastic about the idea, though they agree the salary might be enough to lure someone to the position.

“Half of room charge is pretty significant, and I’m sure there will be somebody willing to do some more work,” Mark Ho ’11 said. “I personally would not sign up for [the job].”

Managing facilities also may not be the most fascinating job for some students, making some question who would take such a possibly time-consuming job.

“I don’t know how many would give up their precious free time,” Courtney Dressing ’10 said, adding that “it would conflict with other obligations like sports practices and performances.”

“Maybe if several students were selected as facilities managers and could divide the work among themselves, the position would be more popular,” she added.

College staff members will appreciate the extra hands.

“I think it’s a good idea for me. It’s hard to set up things on our own at night and on weekends. This way the kids will know how to do it by themselves,” said Vernd Jaeger, a Building Services employee in Wilson.

The application for Mathey-Rocky position is due today. Interested students in other colleges should keep an eye on their inboxes.
