Connor Diemand-Yauman has been elected the first president of the Class of 2010, defeating J. Brendan McGuire in a 24-hour runoff election that concluded yesterday afternoon.
Diemand-Yauman ran on the slogan "two last names, one vision" and promised to give freshmen more opportunities for community service.
"As freshmen, it can be easy to play it safe and simply follow in the footsteps of others, especially in groups such as student government," Diemand-Yauman said in an email. "However, we must recognize that staying in the lines is boring and approaching a new position with rigid expectations is dangerous."
Freshmen chose Fatu Conteh '10 as their vice president and her roommate Phoebe Jin '10 as secretary. In an interview with The Daily Princetonian, Jin said she "would dedicate her leadership" to serving her class.
Rounding up the positions, Aditya Panda '10 was elected treasurer and Michael Chou '10 social chair.
Diemand-Yauman said he will draw on previous experience in community and humanitarian service as he goes forward in leading the class. At West Geauga High School in Chesterland, Ohio, he founded a student group called "Impact" that raised money for charitable causes.
"From that experience, I learned how much a handful of dedicated, hardworking individuals can truly accomplish," Diemand-Yauman said, adding that Princeton "has a responsibility to serve as a model for other universities."
