Pub opens in Chancellor Green

A large crowd of undergraduates, graduate students and faculty packed Chancellor Green Cafe Friday for the opening night of the University Pub, a pilot program designed to gauge demand for a permanent campus bar.

"The administration is always trying to find events to bring together different kinds of people from the campus, but if you want to have an event that people are going to come too, you have to serve some alcohol," said Sandy Gibson '06, a Pub Committee member and student head of the Pub Nights.

The committee — comprised of undergraduates, graduates, alumni, dining services and administration officials — has been experimenting with different ways to serve alcohol to community members of legal drinking age since last year. The success of the inaugural pub night indicates that a permanent bar may be feasible next year.

"No matter what the Street has, it's always going to be a different kind of place. The idea behind the pub is that it's everyone's place, and the Street is not a place where you can really sit down and have a conversation," Gibson said.

Professors, fraternity brothers, eating club members and graduate students were among those who showed up to buy beer and wine, listen to live jazz and unwind.

"I think it's a good idea because I'm a graduate student and we only have the D-bar, which is fine, but it's good to have a change of scene and to get a different mix of people. We need more of these," David Russell GS said as he left the Cafe.

The pub was open to PUID holders of legal drinking age from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Since the event fell during Passover, Manischewitz was available for observant Jewish patrons.

While the possibility of a permanent pub next year remains uncertain, the University believes a campus bar could function as a social option analogous to Cafe Vivian or Murray Dodge Cafe.

Currently, upperclassmen can choose among only a few local bars, including Ivy Inn and the more costly Triumph Brewery.

"There's a lot of other issues when you're thinking of opening up a full time bar ... it's still very much up in the air and there're always issues, like some people in the [Princeton] Borough are really against things like this," Gibson said.

Three more pub nights are scheduled for April 28, May 12 and May 19, each of which will feature a theme such as Latin Night or Beers of the World.
