SCOOP NYC
Third & 73rdFor women: Scoop offers a mix of uber-trendy, ubiquitous labels like Juicy Couture and Seven jeans with a few eclectic brands thrown into the mix. You can get your fill of Juicy terrycloth tube dresses or try to channel that effortless boho look a la Sienna Miller. In addition, labels such as Jet make t-shirts designed especially for Scoop, offering some variety and individuality in the homogeneous t-shirt world.
For men: Beware, proverbial jeans and t-shirt guy: this store is not for you! Scoop does not sell just any pair of jeans — or plain t-shirts for that matter. No Levi's or Hanes here, but you'll find Seven, Joie and AG jeans and t-shirts by James Perse. Scoop has the urban cowboy look down to a T, lasso not included.
OLIVE & BETTES
UES: Madison & 82nd; UWS: Columbus and 72nd; West Village: 384 Bleecker; Soho: 158 SpringWhat started as a tiny shop on the Upper East Side — a place where everyone knew your name and your business — is now a rapidly growing franchise, with a location on the Upper West Side, two stores downtown and a merchandise selection that reflects all of these neighborhoods.
Olive and Bettes is the place to get patterned rain boots, theory black pants, funky charm bracelets and dangling earrings. Plus, any salesperson will be more than happy to search your friend's recent purchases on their computer to make sure you won't have the traumatizing experience of wearing the same thing.
BARNEYS COOP
660 Madison Avenue; Chelsea: 236 West 18th Street; Soho: 116 Wooster; UWS: 2151 BroadwayIf Barneys is the downtown of New York City department stores, then COOP is the newest "it" neighborhood. Though it has stores in Chelsea, Soho and the Upper West Side, COOP's best-known and best-stocked location takes up two floors of the Madison Avenue department store. The top floor houses its less expensive lines and boasts a "jeans bar" stocked with — gasp — all the denim one could want (almost) and a lipstick laboratory where you can mix colors and create a signature shade. Downstairs oozes the nonchalant, I-just-rolled-out-of-bed-and-look-fabulous look, selling brands like Marni and Mui Mui. Watch out for the lesser-known brands that COOP is famous for picking up.
RALPH LAUREN MEN'S STORE
Madison and 72nd StreetThe Ralph Lauren store on 72nd Street and Madison Avenue could just be Princeton in a nutshell: a beautiful mansion used for pleasure rather than living, and practically bursting with cable knit. The merchandise is pretty self-explanatory but the scenery adds a little something extra to the usual Ralph Lauren shopping splurge. You just might be inspired to pick up a pocket square on your way out.
ALICE UNDERGROUND
481 Broadway near Grand StreetBe prepared to get down and dirty. Alice Underground is stuffed — overstuffed, really — with vintage clothes. This is where to go if you want an '80s prom queen getup, towering '70s platforms, enormous sunglasses, Eagles t-shirts, lacy slips, flowing skirts or cocktail rings that exude "bling." While one could spend hours perusing the racks, I would recommend going with a coveted item in mind. Otherwise, it can get frustrating, though there is a high probability that you will find a surprising treasure among the piles of clothing. The salespeople are eager to join in your search party, critique your selection and put away that amazing red dress in the window. You'll likely go home happy, but please, dry clean.
ZITOMERS PHARMACY
Madison Avenue between 75th and 76th StreetThe word pharmacy is grossly misleading here. Zitomers is more like a cosmetic heaven. Out with flourescent signs, dirty aisles and the special deals on heart-shaped candy boxes in April; in with glistening, glittering, bejeweled and bedazzled — well, everything. Along with your Herbal Essences Rainforest Body Scrub, you can pick up some Keratase deep conditioner, Kheil's Lip Balm, Mason Pearson Brushes and — oh yeah — Gucci sunglasses, Chinchilla wraps, Nars lipstick and the newest, latest, coolest blackberry device. It's a field day for those among us who are not overwhelmed and overjoyed by the Maybelline selection at Rite Aid.
ACTIVE WAREHOUSE
514 Broadway near Broome StreetWhile this area of Broadway houses many of the city's finest sneaker stores, Active Warehouse is certainly the cream of the crop. It's got Pumas and Converses in every shade of the rainbow, and even a wide selection for those who wear sneakers for reasons other than high fashion. You can also get sports team jerseys and all other sorts of athletic gear, such as North Face coats and backpacks. The store is three levels and the sales people move at a fast pace, but you will find what you are looking for and then some.
CENTURY 21
22 Cortlandt Street near Church StreetFor lovers of sample sales and bargains, Century 21 is your haven. This is not a store for the faint of heart. This store is made for the true New Yorker: you must be fast, you must be pushy, ruthless and willing to strip down in a room crowded with clothes and people to try on your finds. And what finds you will have. Designer clothing is often more than 40 percent off, and you won't necessarily be limited to last season's "so over" collections. The stock changes quicker than you can say "orange is the new black," so your pleasure with Century 21 depends on the day you go.
AMY CHAN
247 Mulberry Street near PrinceAmy Chan sates the desire of anyone looking for a unique and different evening bag, a commodity that is hard to come by. Coming in all shapes and sizes and shades of the metallic rainbow, this NoLita boutique carries bags by Alice & Trixie and Petrozillia, among others. While you might be wary of carrying these chic and expensive numbers to the street, they are just so cute and disco-era that you probably won't be able to help yourself.
