The University on Monday appointed Laurel Harvey as its chief compliance officer — a position which coordinates different academic and administrative departments' compliance with internal and external regulatory measures.
Harvey will take her new post on Nov. 1. She has worked for the administration since 1981, most recently serving as general manager for administration.
Harvey said in a written statement that she will work to coordinate efforts "with respect to the array of significant requirements [with] which this institution must comply by law, regulation, contract or policy."
She said she hopes to "remove bureaucratic barriers that make compliance more difficult than it needs to be," adding that she would like to create a forum to discuss related issues.
Harvey's appointment means that department and program managers will now have a point person in Nassau Hall to help to ensure that the necessary information and support are available to managers.
Harvey will report to Mark Burstein, the new vice president of administration and chairman of the recently-formed Executive Compliance Committee.
Explaining the need for a point person, Burstein said that while many departments had made outstanding compliance attempts, "it would help if we had a senior administrator to help coordinate those efforts."
He said Harvey was tapped for the post because of her familiarity with the University and her background, among other reasons.
Harvey has a "deep knowledge of the institution, which is important in this job because the efforts are distributed," Burstein said. "[She] understands the University, how it works and how to improve how it works."
Harvey said she was looking forward to working with other University officials.
"Nothing gives me more satisfaction than working with the incredibly smart and dedicated colleagues in administrative and academic departments who are continuously finding better ways to conduct their business operations," she said.
"That means, all things being equal, that there are less distractions to our basic missions of teaching and research, and that should be good news for our students," she added.

Harvey received a master's degree in business administration from the University of Rochester and has held a range of positions in the University's finance offices.
