Museum patron damages priceless ancient vase

A fragment of an ancient vase on display in the University Art Museum was broken Saturday when a running eight-year-old girl bumped into its pedestal, Museum Director Susan Taylor said.

"The child was okay," Taylor said. "That was our first concern. We then made sure we had secured the safety of the object."

Taylor said the piece transcends price.

"We never give out values of our works of art," she said. "But any object in a museum extends beyond monetary value."

The fragment, attributed to the Greek artist Euphronios, dates from 520 B.C. and is a prime example of the "Attic red" style, characterized by groups of figures painted in a red color scheme.

Taylor said the fragment did not break, but a crack that was previously repaired came loose. Taylor said the repair is "very minor" and the fragment will be on display again "in no time."

The Museum currently utilizes the most up-to-date security devices such as alarms and stationed security guards to protect its pieces, she said.
