Health and Wellness Center still in preliminary planning

Though plans are underway for a new campus Health and Wellness Center, the dream will likely not be reality for 7 to 10 years, University Chief Medical Officer Daniel Silverman said.

Silverman first introduced the idea of the center in October, upon his arrival at the University after his appointment in August. Then, Silverman told the 'Prince' that the center is part of the University's effort "to help people have healthy bodies in which to put their brilliant minds," adding that the center will aim to do so in "an integrated and holistic way."

A written proposal that Silverman is currently working on and will soon present to University administrators is the first step in the lengthy process of approving the plans for the center, Silverman said.

In October, Silverman told the 'Prince' he had already received an enthusiastic response to preliminary plans from director of the Frist Campus Center Paul Breitman, Provost Amy Guttman and President Shirley Tilghman.

Following receipt of the proposal, Silverman said, University officers will conduct a feasibility study and present it to the Provost's office, the senior vice president for administration's office and the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life. President Tilghman will give it her stamp of approval before passing it on to the Board of Trustees.

If the trustees then vote in favor of the project, construction will go forth, Silverman said.

The center, which Silverman described in an email as a "'marketplace' of services and programs," will offer physical therapy and rehabilitation as well as psychological counseling and a spiritual center.

Students will also be able to take yoga and aerobics classes, play recreational sports and undergo leadership training complete with a climbing wall and ropes course, according to Silverman's plans. In addition, to promote healthy eating as well as exercise, the center will have a juice bar and offer nutritional counseling services.

Emphasizing that the center will be "a facility that welcomes all members of the Princeton University family," Silverman said the center will provide childcare services, thus allowing graduate students and faculty with families to make better personal use of the facilities.
