Borough Police arrest two students on DWI charges

Two University undergraduates were arrested during the past two days for driving while intoxicated, Borough Police said.

Andrew McCagg '05, 20, was charged at 1:51 a.m. yesterday, when police responded to a report of a University golf cart ramming into a barrier at the intersection of Prospect Ave. and Washington Rd. Police said they determined that McCagg had been operating the cart under the influence of alcohol.

Nobody was injured in the incident, police said.

William Pollack '03, 21, was charged at 2:04 a.m. Wednesday when police found him in the University Store parking lot passed out behind the wheel of his car with the engine running and determined he had been driving under the influence of alcohol, they said.

Borough Police Lt. Dennis McManimon said he did not recollect when the last University-related DWI took place, but that he has observed more University-related DWIs this year than usual. He said the police hadn't been making an additional effort to crack down on DWIs.

Neither McCagg nor Pollack returned telephone calls yesterday.

Both students were released and have court dates set for April 21. Typically, the minimum punishment for a first offense includes both a six month license suspension and $250 fine, McManimon said.

McCagg was authorized to drive the cart, which belonged to the intramural sports program, said Barry Weiser, Public Safety's crime prevention specialist. The cart suffered a bent steering column, left side, and plastic front cover and a damaged front suspension system, he said.

Weiser said the cart is currently in a garage to determine repair costs.

McCagg is from Mitakashawi Osawa, Japan, and Pollack is from New York City, according to police reports.
