Princeton, Oxford debate Iraq war, Notorious B.I.G.

The Princeton and Oxford debate teams met in Whig Senate Chamber last night for a debate entitled "Is England America's Tool in the War on Terror?"

The montage of international concern and playground humor — in which the debaters referenced the Notorious B.I.G. and pimps — was a fun precursor to Princeton's more orthodox Adlai E. Stevenson Memorial Parliamentary Debate Tournament, which the Princeton Debate Panel will be hosting this weekend.

Princeton's Jonathan "Yoni" Schneller '03 — who with Eduardo Parillon '02 placed first in the American Parliamentary National Championships last year — began the debate.

Schneller introduced his argument by using the rapper Notorious B.I.G.'s lyrics to make a derogatory and profane analogy of how submissive Britain is to the U.S. "You don't want anything except our approval," Schneller said.

Oxford's Tom Goodhead's rebuttal began with an attack on Princeton. Goodhead tried to prove Oxford's superiority by stating that the school is 500 years older than Princeton. Goodhead attempted to challenge Schneller's statement that the U.K. is getting little from aiding the U.S.

"We quite like being imperialists," Goodhead said in attempting to reflect the general attitude of the U.K. The oil the U.K would procure for a successful war in the Middle East would provide England with the money "to add a new wing to Buckingham Palace," he said.

Referring to Goodhead's statement that the U.K used to control America, the University's Nick Pilchak '04 asked, "How'd that work out for you?"

After Oxford's Tom Roebuck argued that the U.S. and U.K. are mutually dependent, the audience expounded on the pimps-and-prostitutes theme in an attempt to support the idea that the U.K. is merely the U.S.'s tool.

The Oxford team was grateful to have Princeton partly fund their visit to the States. Towards the end of the debate Schneller stated how he was happy to have the Oxford team visit Princeton: "It's nice to bounce off ideas off others with different accents."
