A Princeton Borough police officer pleaded guilty Monday to reckless driving, but his DWI charge was dismissed. Both charges stemmed from an Oct. 28 incident on the Bristol-Meyers Squibb campus in Lawrence Township.
Patrol Officer James Doyle, 25, received a $202 fine and had his driver's license revoked for 30 days by the Lawrence Township Municipal Court.
Bristol-Meyers Squibb security called Lawrence Township police the night of Oct. 28 after finding Doyle in his stopped car. He was "unresponsive" to security, prompting them to call the police, said Lt. Charles Edgar of the Lawrence police.
Officers approached the car and opened the door, but Doyle continued to be unresponsive and attempted to drive the car, which was running, Edgar said.
Doyle was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. Edgar said that Doyle's blood alcohol content was above the New Jersey legal limit of .10 percent.
Princeton Borough Police Chief Charles Davall said that an internal investigation into the incident would conclude by today. Doyle has remained on active duty since the incident, Davall said. "There will be discipline but I can't say what degree," Davall said. "He will be disciplined."
Davall said that the incident would not affect debate in the Borough over enforcement of underage drinking laws. "It shouldn't have any impact at all," he said.
This is the first incident of an officer charged with a DWI in the 23 years that Davall has been with the force, he said.
Davall characterized the incident as a "mistake an off-duty officer made. We all make mistakes," he said.
