Former Rutgers dean to return as president

Richard McCormick was named on Oct. 25 the new president of Rutgers University. He faces a proposal to merge Rutgers with the state's two other colleges, budget shortfalls and a lack of space.

McCormick, the president of the University of Washington since 1995, will take the reigns on Dec. 1. Though he withdrew his name for consideration last month, he said his long professional and family ties to Rutgers compelled him to return.

He was a history professor and dean there for 19 years, and his parents had worked there for a combined 58 years.

"This has been a very difficult decision for me and my family," McCormick said in a statement. "There are few jobs in the country for which I would even consider leaving the University of Washington, and Rutgers is one of them."

As the 19th president of a school with more than 50,000 students, McCormick confronts several key issues facing state higher education. McCormick said at his naming ceremony that the proposal did not significantly influence his decision to accept the post.

For all these challenges, McCormick will be awarded a yearly salary of $525,000. His predecessor, Francis Lawrence, who resigned in February after 12 years in the top post, earned $362,000. A former Rutgers provost at the Newark campus, Normal Samuels, had been interim president.
