A stroll through the Rocky dining hall or McCosh Hall confirms that universities like Princeton are strongly rooted in the gothic tradition. Few would argue that the beauty of these buildings should not worthy of emulation but many would argue that the campus should not be molded into a homogeneous sea of gothic buildings.

While renowned architect Frank Gehry designed the new science library is his modern style, falling back to collegiate gothic architecture for the design of Whitman College may not project the right feel for the University.

The University is home to a highly-regarded architecture department that, given the opportunity to develop new plans, may create buildings that future generations would want to emulate.

Collegiate Gothic may be the best fit for Whitman College, but as the University moves forward with new projects, administrators should look to keep the University at the forefront of architectural design.
